Re: 2008 Palimplist Discussions
For anyone interested, in October I was thinking about starting a thread in which I would chronicle/review my plan to read nothing but horror for a month. I'll be making every attempt to read serious, high quality novels and short stories. It's sort of a vague plan, so I thought I'd throw out the idea, and see if a) any of you thought it was a good idea, and b) if any of you had any ideas for it, or even novels or stories to recommend.
Anyway, regardless of whether I start the thread, that's what I'll be reading in October. Because I'm a geek, you see. |

The thread is definitely a good idea. As for recommendations, I haven't got a clue, and if you're sufficiently 'into' horror to want to devote a month to it, you're bound to know any names I would know anyway. Having said that, Jonathan Carroll springs to mind. Is he horror?

Depends on the book. Most of his books that I've read I would say qualify, though not all. I wish I hadn't already read The Land of Laughs, so I could read it in October. That's by far his best book, as far as I'm concerned.

It snagged me in exactly the same way. Even two weeks later (a long time for me) I'm still awed by the experience. I will probably upgrade this to a as it sticks with me like a bizarre dream

Re: 2008 Palimplist Discussions
Hi Alan
I'm conflicted over Tommy Wilhelm as a character. I am really beginning to love Bellow as a writer; his themes, allusions and characterizations are rich and multilayered. But, just as I grew to absolutely detest Nedra in Light Years and it somewhat spoiled that book for me, I felt nothing but contempt for Tommy by the end of Seize The Day-and I'm not sure that's what Bellow was going for.
