Default Competition... writing ABOUT short stories

Interesting competition set up via the novelist Alison MacLeod's course at Chichester:

The 2013 THRESHOLDS International Short Story Forum
Feature Writing Competition

Write an essay about short stories... Deadline horribly tight though.

Thanks for the heads up, though. I might see what I can do between now and Wednesday midnight!

Well, I submitted something - just managed to sneak in ahead of the deadline. Probably not a contender, but it got me "properly" book reviewing again, which is something I've been missing from my life for a while.

The competition rules say that entries posted on a personal website are still eligible (ie: not published) so I'll stick it on my blog later and post a link.

Good luck Nou... I did get an email last week asking me to submit something so I'd guess submissions were looking threadbare.

[thinks]

Of course if you don't win now that'll look bad, won't it?

Here's the piece, for those who can't wait to find out if I made the grade. No masterpiece, but not terrible for last minute keyboard bashing.

Thanks. It was a little strange for me though, as in parts the editing of it seemed sort of pointless. Rephrasings that don't add much, at least in my opinion, but which mean that it doesn't sound like "me" anymore (I've been edited before, but maybe not so creatively). Still, it may prove a useful experience, and just because it feels odd to me doesn't mean it's worse!

Did they work with you on the editing? It's a weird process.

Not as such. They upped the text and sent me a pre-link so I could review. I made a few changes to the original, but the substantial stuff was just there when they went public. I say substantial, it's not, but like I said there are changes that don't do much except rephrase me.

In my original, I didn't mention the writers and titles of the two stories until after I'd talked about them; they told me up front that they wanted to go "In A by B, blah blah... In C by D, blah blah", which was fine by me. However, the first description was made longer and second cut shorter, making them feel (to me) unbalanced, and the second was rolled straight into a simplification of the final line that isn't my one.

This is the version on my blog, if you care to compare. The problem for me now is that the version I tweaked for them was better than this, but I didn't update my blog with the same changes. I might get around to it, but given the low number of hits I get there, it's not a high priority!
