Default R.I.P., Patrick Moore

I'm sad to read that Patrick Moore has died. He was one of those people you don't really think of that way, rather as a part of the national culture who happens to be a person. In his case, part of a previous national culture perhaps; The Sky at Night was the kind of program that might not even get made by mainstream TV nowadays and his persona was never less than truly eccentric instead of commercially wacky.

Would you all rise as the bands plays...

Now he's dead, all the professional astronomers are rushing to heap plaudits on him. When he was alive, they tended to look down their noses at him.

I can honestly say that Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov had more to do with my degree in astrophysics than did Patrick Moore, though I seldom missed The Sky at Night on tv. He had a refreshingly eccentric air about him, and was a great communicator.

Quite odd though, wasn't he?

On the plus side, I had a friend who wrote to him about astronomy when she was a teenager and he invited her along to meet and took her ideas perfectly seriously.

On the other hand he was chair of the New Britain Party.

One of the last of the generation of TV presenters who could get their message across without having to be flown to a different continent for each sentence.
