Default Edinburgh Book Festival 2011

Dear Palimpsest Edinburgh Book Festivallers

With only 4 days to the release of the program, who's on your wishlist?

Shall I start with the Germans? Alina Bronsky and Thomas Pletzinger.

I'd also like to hear Tea Obrecht explain her Orange Prize winning but bemusing Tiger's Wife.

And surely Stradlater will be making an appearance too?

Edward St Aubyn will be there, and I'm hoping Dermot Healy will make an appearance. I also expect to see Stradlater there.

Lizzy, I also expect to see you, Stewart and Ang there, along with Leyla.

I'd certainly go to see Anne Enright again if she is there. I'm there the first week only this time.

I don't attend to hear authors reading or answering questions - I just go to buy books (sometimes that may be just book).

Oh, I have no interest in hearing them read either. It's very boring. Suhayl Saadi at Edinburgh, promoting Joseph's Box, was the most painful reading ever attended. Out of the event, he must have taken up twenty-five minutes reading from something that was in no way interesting and in a style that was not engaging. Something about lutes. Co-guest Rana Dasgupta looked bored and I'm sure it even managed to sober up Stuart Kelly, who was chairing.

That said, I've still attended a couple of great readings. None, that I can recall anyway, at the Edinburgh Book Festival. Separately, Alasdair Gray and James Kelman at Waterstone's; and Yoko Tawada at the Goethe Institut. Even Alan Bissett at his last book launch in the Arches. Great times. And, even though he wasn't doing a reading and I wasn't all that interested in his book, I still though Neal Stephenson was great, partly because he eschewed reading in favour of walking up and down the stage talking about his work and answering questions as they came.

I was also in attendance at that excruciating reading Quite the worst event ever.

BUT (a big one) there are some authors who do understand performance and because of that I would happily attend any event of theirs. Sebastian Barry and Janice Galloway among them.

I thought of you when I saw the Galloway entry in the programme, Lizzy.

I'd add Anne Enright to the list of superb performers. Sadly, she is not in the programme.

Another superb performer: Eoin Colfer. Go, even if you don't like his books. It doesn't matter.

I'm excited about Tobias Wolfe. There seems to be a lot more that I'd want to see in the second week, but maybe that's because I can't be there. I only cried out in despair once (Colm Toibin). I'm seeing Jane Harris at London Lit Fest in July, otherwise that would have got me crying out too.

While we're talking of performers, let's add Alexander McCall-Smith to the list.

Now to the programme ....

It does seem a bit slow during week one I admit - but there's surely an opportunity for a mini-day out on the 16th - lunch before Sebastian Barry at 13:30?
