Default Quick questions

It seems like, for the first time in Palimpular history, Book Reviews is taking over from Gen Chat as the most active forum. To try and restore some parity, here's a little book based questionnaire.

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?

2) What was the last book you bought for someone else?

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a books someone has given/lent you?

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?
P.G. Wodehouse, Leave it to Psmith in lovely Everyman hardback edition. (Two weeks and one day ago - that's not a bad period of abstinence for me!)

2) What was the last book you bought for someone else?
P.G. Wodehouse, A Damsel in Distress in similar lovely Everyman edition.

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?
T.C. Boyle, Riven Rock (I think) - a year or more ago, and no I haven't read it yet

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?
Alain de Botton, Status Anxiety

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?
The Complete Far Side which weighs about three stone and would almost certainly give rise to a personal injury claim. There are however people I would not lend books to - those who crease spines and do other unmentionable things!

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a book someone has given/lent you?
No but I hardly ever borrow books (the T.C. Boyle was unrequested...)

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?
Howard Jacobson, No More Mr Nice Guy - a female friend was appalled by the sex scene with an underage girl. Her boyfriend loved it though...

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?
Oh god, look, I’ve been comfort reading this month – all re-reads and easy stuff – Nigel Slater’s Toast and Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl. They were both bought at the same time and are already read, so now I have to read something more demanding that’s been sitting on my shelf, daring me to stretch my mind just a little.

2) What was the last book you bought for someone else?
Snow Falling on Cedars.

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?
The Tao of Pooh

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?
Donna Tartt’s The Little Friend

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?
My copy of G.B. Sansom’s Short Cultural History of Japan, or my Kanji or Japanese-English dictionaries.

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a book someone has given/lent you?
Two unsolicited lendings stand out – Marion Keyes’ Watermelon and Miss Garnet’s Angel by Sally Vickers. I struggled manfully with both for a while but had to abandon them because I couldn’t stand the waves of saccharine.

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?
Not to my knowledge, though I once lent a few John Irvings to a friend, never to see them again. I think more because he never read them than due to any offence given, though.

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?

Yeats is Dead - Various, a week or so ago in Oxfam. The last book I bought new was Basho's The Narrow Road to the Deep North which accompanied me on my not so narrow road to the not quite so deep North.

2) What was the last book you bought [specifically] for someone else?

I think the last one was the story of a girl in Vietnam, my mum got for Xmas, called something Tapestry or something. She seemed to like it anyway.

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?

The Girl at the Lion d'Or by Sebastian Faulks

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?
Normally I give people books instead of lending them, so that I don't have to carry them home. There are a couple on Language Change on extended loan (currently 2 years or so) which I've theoretically lent and will probably get back some time or other, that I'd be just as happy to see stay out on loan.

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?
No. Like John said if I really wanted to keep a book, I wouldn't lend it to certain people, though in my case it's because I wouldn't get it back.

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a books someone has given/lent you?
No. There are books you don't like, where you say, thanks anyway but it wasn't really my kind of thing, but that's all.

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?
Yes. I gave a copy of my scribblings to a friend of mine, with an explanation that one of the characters wasn't really based on her, though to some extent it was. The character wasn't that bad, but the friend never spoke to me again. If I hadn't put in the stuff about it not being her she probably wouldn't have noticed the similarities. Doh!

Okay then, here we go:

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?

It was four - those classics from Ottakar's: The Great Gatsby, A Passage to India, Lolita and Brideshead Revisited.

2) What was the last book you bought for someone else?

A Short History of Nearly Everything for my Dad at Christmas.

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?

Anglo English Attitudes - Geoff Dyer, which Selfo kindly sent me.

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?

The Business of Dying - Simon Kernick, winging its way to amner as we type.

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?

I don't think so. Nearly all my books are paperbacks and in print, so none are terribly valuable. I do dip into my essay collections by Amis and Ackroyd quite a lot, so I'd miss not having those around even for a short while.

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a books someone has given/lent you?

No. I very rarely borrow books, and then only from people I trust. Content wise I can't really be shocked, quality wise - I suppose J2G2 wasn't terribly good. But then I knew what to expect so it wan't really that much of a shock.

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?

I once lent American Psycho to a girl I worked with in a bank. Appalled is exactly what she was. I think she got as far as the bit with the rat.

1) What was the last book you bought for yourself?

Well there were four, all bought on the same day, as I wanted to complete the set (they have changed the covers again) while I could still get them to match:

Sandman IV: A Season of Mists
Sandman VIII: Worlds' End
Sandman IX: The Kindly Ones
Sandman X: The Wake

all by Neil Gaiman

This is about to change though, as I have just left one office, and as a leaving present they gave me £15 in book tokens

2) What was the last book you bought for someone else?

A Rough Guide to Drumming: Top Tips

for my boyfriend, because he is learning to drum, and it was £2.99 in Music Zone

3) What was the last book you borrowed from someone else?

Lady of Hay - Barbara Erskine

from my Mum, as she thought I would enjoy it

4) What was the last book you lent someone else?

Badgers Moon
The Haunted Abbot
Smoke in the Wind

the last three Sister Fidelma paperbacks (so far) by Peter Tremayne, I leant these to my Mum, as she is working her way through the series.

5) Is there a book you would refuse to lend to someone?

No, the issue is not the book, but the people. If I trust them to return the book in the same condition I leant it to them, then I will pretty much lend them anything (must be the wannabe librarian in me)

6) Have you ever been offended or appalled by a books someone has given/lent you?

Nope. Can't think of anything.

7) Have you ever offended or appalled someone else by the book you have provided them with?

Nope. As I said, I am very selective about who I lend to.
