Default Coming soon from the New York Review of Books Classics...

I'm sure I'm not the only devotee of this range on the Palimpsest. Until I discovered the NYRB Classics I was never much interested in the physical aesthetics of a book, but now my shelf is heavily populated by NYRB releases which I most probably wouldn't think of buying if it weren't for their appeal as objects of terrific appeal. I'm more likely to 'take a punt' on a NYRB book than any other. And of course, any publishing house which wrests the likes of Stoner and A Meaningful Life from obscurity must be doing something correct.

This article: http://www.rochester.edu/College/tra...ex.php?id=2776

is interesting for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it reports that the following titles are soon to be pubished by NYRB:

George Simenon - Act Of Passion (Though I haven't read one yet I think this may be about the eighth or ninth Simenon NYRB have published)

Bohumil Hrabal - Dancing Lessons For The Advanced In Age (I like the sound of this, though I have vague memories of giving up on I Served The King Of England in my late teens)

Boleslaw Prus - The Doll

Vladimir Sorokin - The Ice Trilogy (I have The Queue on my TBR list)

There's also an extraordinary story about some Russian nationalists who threw copies of Sorokin's Blue Lard into a fake oversized toilet because it features gay sex scenes involving Stalin and Krushchev clones. Comment would be superfluous.

Well, here endeth the news.

I'm a big Hrabal fan, but I have to say that Dancing Lessons isn't all that great. There's a good story in there somewhere, which as always with Hrabal contains both hard-hitting politics and R-rated slapstick humour, but the shtick of having the whole novel be one long sentence (which often translates to "putting a comma where there should be a full stop") gets old pretty quickly.

Sounds like I need to read Sorokin.

The Glenway Wescott thread has led me to discover that there is a NYRB Classics edition of TH White's The Goshawk. Very tempting...
