I take it you know about the hidden tracks in his last release? Details of how to unlock them were mentioned on his page on his agents' website, Coda Agency http://www.codaagency.com/rosterli.html but the pages have been down for a week or so now; from memory you press something or other during track 2 to unlock them. But it's probably common knowledge to you avid fan chaps.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't bought Luke Haines is Dead yet, which is something I shall have to remedy next week. The incentive to get to a record shop is increased as another favourite band, dEUS, have released a new album after six or seven years

Unless you mean the secret track on Das Capital...The Songwriting Genius of Luke Haines, which involves pressing 'back' on track one to get the Auteurs medley.

ah, it might have been that; wish I'd put a link here when I spotted it as the piece seems to have gone

I see that Sarah Nixey, of Black Box Recorder, has launched her solo career.

John, did you ever see Luke when he was playing in Belfast?

No, I thought Stewart Lee was doing his stand-up the same night and decided to see him, though it turned out to be a different night. By the time I realised this it was too late (ie the night after Haines had played).

John, could you recommend a CD's worth of tracks to sum up Haines' stuff?

God, what a good question. Actually, do us a definitive listing, say a dozen songs, JS and Blixa, and I'll have a Limewire sesh tonight...

Well as a ready-made collection, you could do a lot worse than Das Capital. Otherwise, off the top of my head, here is some essential Hainesiana, all by his group the Auteurs unless otherwise stated:
  • Unsolved Child Murder (from After Murder Park)
  • Lenny Valentino (from Das Capital or Now I'm a Cowboy)
  • Kidnapping an Heiress (as Black Box Recorder, from England Made Me)
  • I'm a Rich Man's Toy (from Now I'm a Cowboy)
  • Satan Wants Me (from Das Capital)
  • The Rubettes (from How I Learned to Love the Bootboys)
  • England, Scotland and Wales (as solo artist, from Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry OST)
  • Child Brides (from After Murder Park)
  • These Are The Things (as Black Box Recorder, from Passionoia)
  • Everything You Say Will Destroy You (from After Murder Park)
  • Future Generation (from How I Learned to Love the Bootboys)
  • Bailed Out (from New Wave)
  • Showgirl (from New Wave or Das Capital)
  • Baader Meinhof (from Baader Meinhof or Das Capital)
  • The Mitford Sisters (from Das Capital)
