Thanks, John. I didn't mean this to be an either/or proposition --but it does seem reasonable that the owner offer some link to help offset costs. And, while I certainly acknowledge that BD has some problems (let's face it all online sellers do), one advantage for the site is that we international readers use it far more than Amazon.uk. I am happy for Wavid to get a percentage of my UK purchases, since the genesis for most of them comes from ideas on this site.

I gather Amazon are planning to buy LoveFilm, who are immensely efficient at what they do. Let's hope they don't start to operate restrictive practices there too.

Do we know when that might happen?

And now, with the news that Amazon has acquired The Book Depository, it's back to square one.

Thanks, Stewart -- I wasn't aware of this. And of course Amazon had already bought Abebooks (although, I have to admit quality of service there has not gone downhill since the purchase). I guess those of us who are touchy about Amazon are just going to have to get used to dealing with an online monopoly. Or pay higher prices for a UK seller like Foyles or Waterstones that also sells online.

Personally I wish everyone would ditch the Tinterweb completely apart from one or two decent sites like the great P. and not have boarded up town centres where people used to go. Then again I do work for Waterstones. That said the books I buy for me come from the little secondhand bookshop up the High Street or Oxfam which is round the corner.
