I'm glad that it makes you more interested, Ang! Show up the naysayers!

The scholar I was referring to was Stephen K. George. He died in 2006 when he was only 41, but he'd already done quite a bit, including founding the John Steinbeck Society of America. He was passionate about Steinbeck, and an intelligent and good man. He produced several books about Steinbeck with Barbara Heavilin. When he died, she put together A John Steinbeck Reader: Essays in Honor of Stephen K. George, which has a particularly nice foreword about George (here is a link to the Google Books preview of that book, which contains some interesting material, though, sadly for this thread, most is about Winter of Our Discontent and none are primarily about East of Eden).

Want so badly to revisit this. Brought it home from the library but am now almost 100 pages into Ghostwritten. Sorry to be dim, but did we decide on February or March to kick off...?

March, I think. I'm only 30 pages in so far.

I'm at page 450 out of 600. I'll try to keep quiet. :)

Actually I'm galloping along with EoE now - page 200+ - and likely to continue at this pace. Not helped though by the plug-ugly 1970's cover art (which is grim enough not to be able to find an example on the internet...)

Finished. And what an ending!
Who else is still reading? If a number of people have finished, we can start discussing earlier than the end of the month.

I have to say I was most overwhelmed by Lee, as much as by the conclusion of the Trask family's heartache.

Hmm, am toying with the idea of getting it on Amazon for just a fraction over a fiver.

I'm only about 80 pages in, but I can see how it's going to carry me along. I love the storytelling, which for some reason I wasn't particularly expecting. I don't know why, but I was expecting it to be all atmosphere and stream-of-consciousness.

The story-telling was a bit too "straight" for my liking. Good is good, bad is bad. What the author wanted me to think, I thought. There was no room for interpretation that I could see. Except maybe...

...Kate, the character who inspired this book choice... is she really pure evil? I'd argue no, she is not.

Unfortunately, my brother borrowed my copy and hasn't even started reading yet. I knew there was a reason I don't normally loan out my books... Anyway, carry on without me and I'll add some commentary later when none of you care anymore.
