Light Years! And A Meaningful Life! Seriously, the next time I buy books on-line, will somebody please remind me to get those?

Hey Bill, the next time you buy books online, don't forget to get Light Years and A Meaningful Life. And while you're at it, why don't you throw in Stoner. And would it kill you to get something nice for me every once in a while?

Both of you, get on the stick!

Raymond Chandler or James Ellroy?

Ellroy because of LA Confidential

Agatha Christie or PD James?

PD James by a mile, even though I've read more Christie.

GK Chesterton or Somerset Maugham?

hmm

John Irving or John Updike?

Updike

Kazuo Ishiguro or David Mitchell?

Frost

Bach

Rachmaninov or Prokofiev?

I used to enjoy flailing the daylights out of a piano, so, Rachmaninoff

Miles Davies or John Coltrane?

Coltrane, as My Favorite Things was ideal background music for a meal recently prepared for me.

Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett?

Bennett!! He appeared on Sesame Street!

Mitchell as I've liked all his books and the only Ishiguro I read either bored or annoyed me by turns.. I know I hear the sharp intakes of breath from out there in the ether!
And I'm really dumb as I - in my Friday work-induced stupor - somehow mistook Ishiguro for Haruki Murakami... Remains of the Day , the only Ishiguro I've read, is fantabulous so I'm still going with Mitchell but it's only by bulk of experience.

Raymond Chandler or James Ellroy?
L.A. Confitential, The Big Nowhere, White Jazz, Black Dahlia, Clandestine, American Tabloid, Brown's Requiem, Lloyd Hopkins Trilogy, My Dark Places...
But there's a reason I haven't bothered with Blood's a Rover yet:
The first 600-or-so pages of The Cold Six Thousand were a chore to read. Then in the final 40-ish it became interesting, and more readable - maybe just a hook by Ellroy for the final part of the Underworld USA trilogy - an eight year hook!
Agatha Christie or PD James?
But only because that gave us the chance to see Peter Ustinov play Poirot. However, I was taken to the West End to see Mousetrap in it's "52nd Year" - it was dreadful. It's on life support.

GK Chesterton or Somerset Maugham?

John Irving or John Updike?
The World According to Garp, but maybe that's less to do with the novel and more to do with Robin Williams in the movie.

Kazuo Ishiguro or David Mitchell? - I haven't read any Mitchell.

Robert Frost or Emily Dickinson?

Mozart or Bach?

Rachmaninov or Prokofiev?

Miles Davis or John Coltrane? - It has to be the "Trane".

Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett? - He never needed to un-retire.

Raymond Chandler or James Ellroy?
Chandler

Agatha Christie or PD James?
Haven't read either of them but having suffered innumerable hours of smug adaptations over the years I never want to even look at the spine of an Agatha Christie book ever again.

GK Chesterton or Somerset Maugham?
I'll parade my ignorance and say I have not enough knowledge of either to form an opinion.

John Irving or John Updike?
Ditto

Kazuo Ishiguro or David Mitchell?
Having not been able to finish either of the Ishiguros (Ishiguri?) I have started - or maybe it was the same one twice?- and having really liked Cloud Atlas....

Robert Frost or Emily Dickinson?
Emily Dickinson because you can sing any of her poems to the tune of The Yellow Rose of Texas

Mozart or Bach?
Argh! Mozart or Bach? Don't make me choose!

Rachmaninov or Prokofiev?
Prokofiev every time.

Miles Davies or John Coltrane?
Dizzy Gillespie

Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett?
Frank's the Man
