'Non-standard' - that's so polite of them! What they mean is wrong.

My pet hate has to be the misuse of apostrophes. For example, I was in a Tesco shop yesterday and they had a couple of signs that said:

Quote:
Flower's for sale
Why the hell is there an apostrophe there? It's plural. Just because you add an "s" does not mean you need an apostrophe.

A betting shop in my home village is called

Quote:
Horse's for Course's
Grrr....

Ah, the greengrocer's apostrophe. I've surely recounted this before, but I remember a funny riff by Lee and Herring on the subject which concluded that people who advertise "Carrot's 30p" should have to wear a sign around their neck saying I DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION AT SCHOOL AND THAT'S WHY I WORK ON A MARKET STALL.

Homophone corner in my local Waterstone's. This is the display material for their Irish Book of the Month, Stuart Neville's The Twelve.

At the risk of being patronising (but someone on Twitter yesterday didn't know what was wrong with the wording), it should be grisly, not grizzly.

Countdown is back on TV for its umpteenth series. It's pretty harmless as TV shows go and if I'm around when it's on I'll sometimes join in. Especially now that Carol Vorderman has been replaced by the unfeasibly attractive Rachel Riley.

But she grates on my nerves terribly when she insists on saying "timesed by" or "times it by". Even when the contestants say "multiplied by the four" or "times six", she corrects them and misuses the language in a way that used to get chalk thrown at people when I was at school. A shame as I could probably forgive her far worse sins.
