I see this painting used a lot:

EDIT: And I just noticed, looking at these covers, that the painting is occasionally subtly altered. Here's the original:

EDIT EDIT: Er, maybe not so altered. I think the dimensions and different shades were throwing me off.

Yes, well spotted bill. A cover obsessed blogger had similar observations (and I like the way he shows two books joined together making another of Friedrich's paintings).

Yeah, that site is where I got the joined Crowley/Collins covers. But I used to have that copy of Frankenstein, and my hardcover of Dr. Haggard's Disease uses the same painting (it's a bit different, in color and layout, from the example I used). And I know I've seen it elsewhere.

Anyhow, now I'm curious to check out that Caustic Cover Critic site at length. That could be quite interesting.

Slightly OT and I may have posted this somewhere hereabouts but for real obsessive compulsive book coveritis look no further than: http://drzeus.best.vwh.net/wotw/wotw.html
a collection of 344 covers for the same book: The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells All lovingly cross indexed by publisher, date, design elements and no end of other criteria. Lots of great and not so great and downright crappy book designs there, including this weirdly rubbish one which somehow manages to slap a picture of Star Trek's USS Enterprise on the front.
