Default Bookalikes

An occasional series showing how book cover designers really do seldom differ.

Number 1
Mary Loudon's Relative Stranger, meet Richard Yates's The Easter Parade.

I prefer the second one. A nicer layout of type.

Two books that had the exact same cover:

The Waking Dream (a historic collection of early photographs from the Gilman Paper Company)

and

In America by Susan Sontag.

Sontag obviously lifted the remarkable photo from the cover of The Waking Dream, which I thought was a bit cheap. Her book has a different cover now. Maybe someone complained.

And, as if by magic, here are the two covers knovella was referring to.

You pays your copyright fee for the photo and you get to use it for that many copies in the print run.

But it is easy to pinch design ideas from others and gently change them.

Number 3: a cross-media bookalike as revealed by today's Observer.

Primal Scream's new single

Ali Smith's Booker-losing (but Whitbread-winning) novel in recently released paperback
