hehehe I got one of those but I won't share it on account of I was cheating

Thanks for the amusing trips to my bookshelves, John. I'm shocked at how much stuff I've got, considering I've only been here 6 months. The problem is books I can't bear to be parted from, and finding them for under a pound at Oxfam shops.

Wow! I know one now! I got it from your clue i) for no. 9, John...

It's Daniel Martin by John Fowles. I thought the first line was familiar but couldn't place it. Bit poor since it's one of my all-time top twenty (would be one of my top 10 but The Magus is my favourite Fowles).

Yes, ono no kamachi, it's Daniel Martin.

To be perfectly honest, it was rather a cheat of me to include this in the first place... I do have it, I have read it... but I can't remember the first thing about anything in it... apart from the names of a couple of the characters...

Final clues:
• there's a character called Pursewarden [the kind of name that you remember...]
• From the paperback blurb: "Mr D------ has written about a dozen real love stories, entwined them, explored them with a truly Proustian ferocity and set them all against the marvellous background of A--------- in the late 'thirties and early 'forties'.

That'll probably be more than enough...

Must be something by Lawrence Durrell. There's a thread on him here, although I've read nothing by him.

Ah yes, must be one of the Alexandria quartet then (judging from JfP's "A---------"). Mountolive? Balthazar? Clea? Or are those Avignon quintuplets?
