Default Top 10 (or preferably more) Soul Songs

Having thoroughly enjoyed American Gangster last night, this morning I hopped straight over to iTunes to download the marvellous Across 100th Street by Bobby Womack and I have been playing on repeat ever since.

This made me think - which are our favourite soul records on the Palimp?

I'd like to add Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield too.

Mmmm... I spent much of my childhood listening to my mother's Motown and Atlantic Soul collections, and here are some of the ones that stick in my mind particularly...

Knock on Wood, Eddie Floyd
Hard to Handle, Otis Redding (also like the Black Crowes' later cover of this)
Hold On, I'm Coming (oo-err) Sam 'n' Dave
Papa was a Rolling Stone, The Temptations

I've no idea what counts as soul, but I'm sure I've a few faves. I'll be watching closely to see what you all come up with.

Me neither. How do you define it? This isn't a trick question by the way and I don't mean to be obtuse - I know that, say, Aretha Franklin is thought of as a 'soul singer' but what exactly constitutes soul and distinguishes it from R&B or rock or pop?

Or funk? I'd definitely include Sly Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher" - which at various points over 5-odd minutes is ALL of those plus gospel - or James Brown's "Sex Machine", or Parliament's "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off That Sucker)", or something by Prince...

So is it a Black thing? He said, not having a clue whether half the acts mentioned above are actually black...

Absolutely. Michael McDonald, Van Morrison, Stevie Winwood, Dusty Springfield, Alison Moyet... Just like there are black rock artists. There does tend to be a pretty uneven balance on both sides, though, which I guess is partly industry-driven; the current definition of "R&B" (which used to mean "rhythm & blues", believe it or not) seems to be "ordinary pop music performed by black people."
