Default What else are you doing?

I suddenly realised why I'm not getting through as many books these days. There's just so much on. I'm writing 3 fictional blogs (I've got blogger's block (or resource exhaustion) on two of them, which takes nearly as much time as not having the block); I'm doing a web site for a band; I've revived an old incomplete game project, which involves using POVRAY to generate scenes (I have to explain to Beryl why I bring the laptop to bed - each scene takes ages to generate, and I have to save it and start the next), and I've got this great idea for another game that I'm planning in pencil and paper at the moment. The IPAQ means I can write almost anywhere anytime so I only seem to read in the bath these days, and there's a limit to how wrinkly I'm prepared to get.

Oh, and did I mention we have a full-time contract with BT for comms software enhancement and fix?

So, what's keeping the rest of you occupied this year?

One or two hefty Life Admin issues have disrupted my reading fairly seriously this year (apart from Aldiss's no-problem comedy romp The Horatio Stubbs Saga), but I think I'll be back on the horse fairly soon.

That said, there are a lot of other things that I want to act as distractions, not least getting the book out once again and not just tinkering under the bonnet of the damn thing, but actually revving it up seriously for publication (the new G5 will help there!). Then, I can start no.2 and yank it out of the planning stage and begin writing properly.

There's also the very steady DVD-ification of an ancient video collection, too...

It's tiredness as much as anything that has put a pause on reading lately, but otherwise I am managing the family, running a busy Under-Fives (aka parent/toddler) group, co-leading a bible study group and leading the young teens group at church, plus meetings for all the above and others.

Like Amner, I am getting back into sending Book 1 into the world, a little bruised and in need of some tinkering with too; plus making a serious effort to finish Book 2, which being of the same mould as Book 1, might join it in the ranks of 'unplaceable' and 'too old for YA, too young for adults'.

I will possibly neglect the garden this year as much as I did in 2005. I am also trying to straighten out our video/DVD collection, which is taking up too much space.

Learning oodles about newfound passion - photography - all thanks to Flickr's influence; and yes, writing the opus magna, too - plus plenty of short pieces. Not too worried about publication for the novel, far too much still to do to be concerned about that yet (it's very much in its shitty first draft stage) and the shorts seem to look after themselves in the main. But the biggest time-eater of all is preparing to swap house-living for life at sea late summer next year - if all goes to plan. Just so much to organise and research and learn. Also, though I know I shall soon be saying goodbye to the garden, I love it too much to abandon it - so am still slaving away till it's too dark to see, mulching borders, potting up containers and baskets and generally preparing it for the summer and year ahead.

It's the Barry Fantoni/Peter Cook cartoon from Private Eye.

A: "I'm writing a book."

B: "Neither am I."

I've been waiting three weeks and one day to hear back about mine. Not that I care, of course. Cough.

You, at least, wshaw, have a track record of published books. Most of the rest of us are just hopeful scribblers.

Can't say I'm writing at all, but I'm drawing like there's no tomorrow.

Can't say I'm reading at all. No train journeys as working from home equals no reduction in TBR pile. Have managed to catch up on a little personal web work so if you're looking for a good london restaurant, this might be of service.

Nice reviews, chilli, but the Edinburgh and Amsterdam ones seem to have dangling links... and these were the ones I wanted to look at!

I've not read anything through since the end of March and I attribute this to an array of other activities. I've taken up swimming and running, in addition to badminton, as I plan on having a holiday in September but want to get into shape for it.

I've written a tiny bit, not enough though. And I've also got back into using Inform, with the intention of creating a text game.

I'm also developing some websites and I've actual done some socialising too - the away from the computer type.
