Will be interested to hear what you think of The Pumpkin Eater, Beth. I read it earlier this year and, though an interesting read, it fell a bit flat for me.

Sam Shepard is fast becoming one of my favourite short story writers - having read his fantastically good Great Dream of Heaven () last year, and the almost as good Day Out of Days () this year, I had thought I only had Cruising Paradise to look forward to, so I was thrilled to find that two of his earlier books are also short stories, though listings on Amazon don't make that immediately obvious (Motel Chronicles is billed as a collection of autobiographical scenes, but then that might also loosely apply to many of the stories about "the actor" in Day Out of Days).

Makes it my next read, thanks Lucoid!

I'm sneaking books past the wife again...

I already own at least two different editions of this utterly bewildering mess of a book but it was stupidly cheap....

New books acquired over the past couple of weeks (most of them arrived this morning in a nice box from Canada)...

And a few second-hand books from http://www.firsts-in-print.co.uk/ which is having a closing down sale with 60% off pretty much everything. Most of them in pretty much pristine condition, though You Must Remember This (from 1987) is looking a bit shelfworn...

Thanks, David, very happy to finish The Pumpkin Eater! and begin Art of Fielding

Oh, Lucoid, "a bit flat" is so kind. The style (or lack of) this thing nearly drove me mad. Most of it reads like a hot mess. Commiserations.

Purchased over the past couple of weeks. Perhaps worth pointing out that I'd ordered the David Gilmour book before reading his 'extraordinary' comments for which he is being - rightly - vilified.

I'm very excited about two of these in particular: I read Tom Barbash's debut novel The Last Good Chance back in 2002 so it has been a long wait for this follow-up story collection; and David MacFarlane's second novel has been even longer coming, having read his brilliant Summer Gone in 2001.

David Gilmour. Frankly, what a tosser.

Don't like his guitar playing much, either.

A triple dollop of lurid Victoriana from my local Poundland:
