I don't have any major reading plans, other than trying out Updike and Roth and working my way through Steinbeck. Since I seem to have amassed a bunch of Scandinavian fiction, I may work through that too.

But what I did find when buggering about with the internet was a list of books from some tome called 1001 Books To Read Before You Die and I thought, why don't I mark them off? So, I've taken the list and added it to my blog and as I read them I'll review and link to the review. Of the 1001 I've read a meagre 51 and 144 of them (read or unread) are currently sitting on my shelves. But I've only reviewed about six or seven of them. So, cue some rereading.

I'm not looking forward to shite like The Lord Of The Rings and Paulo Coelho, most of the sci-fi stuff, and all the 'oh sir, avert your eyes from my petticoat' Austen type books. So I'll probably leave them a long, long time. Not quite sure how the hell Ardel O'Hanlon's The Talk Of The Town got in such a list or, indeed, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time. At least a reread of the latter should only take a few hours.

I've read 236 of Stewart's list (well, the list Stewart posted): that's if The Last of Mr Norris is the same book as Mr Norris Changes Trains. About 25%, not bad; obviously heavily weighted to the 20th century (as the list itself is). Probably about 50 more if you add in the ones I couldn't finish. And of the ones I've read, I reckon I hated about half of them.

I have read a comparatively pathetic 71 of that list, though there are probably 30 or so more that have been started but never finished. And there are a whole load currently unread on the shelf.

I might do that, but... stuff like that needs to be organized. I'm lazy.

Thanks, added to the list!

A mere 50 for me, but many many (hundreds) on the shelves ready to be read.

Just ordered All Quiet on the Western Front after reading the list - I did not know the film was based on a book.

110 read from the list plus a few more started, never to be finished. Probably another 30 on my shelves that I plan on reading at some time.

There are also some on the list that I have no desire to read. I have read two of Paul Auster's books and have no real urge to read the others that appear on the list.

Yes, there seems to be far too much Auster, Coetzee, and some others on that list. Five out of the six Ishiguros; no Yates.

Where did the list come from?

Edit: Never mind - I see now from page one of this thread. The memory's going...
