1. My mama took me by the arm and led me out into the street by the service entrance of the prefecture.

2. On St. Valentine's Day, 1989, the last day of her life, the legendary popular singer Vina Apsara woke sobbing from a dream of human sacrifice in which she had been the intended victim.

3. If I am out of my mind, it's all right with me, though Moses Herzog.

4. In the beginnig there was a river. The river became a road and the road branched out to the whole world. And because the road was once a river it was always hungry.

5. I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allan Poe; nor am I one of your Hollywood-movie ectoplasms. I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fibre and liquids - and I might even be said to posess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.

6. It was love at first sight.

7. In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains.

8. My father and mother should have stayed in New York where they met and married and where I was born. Instead, they returned to Ireland when I was four, my brother, Malachy, three, the twins, Oliver and Eugene, barely one, and my sister, Margaret, dead and gone.

9. Platero is small, fluffy, soft; so soft on the outside that one would say he is all cotton, that he carries no bones. Only the jet-dark mirrors of his eyes are hard as two beetles of black crystal.

10. All happy families are alike but an unhappy family is unhappy after its own fashion.

3. Herzog, Saul Bellow

5. Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison (have you noticed that so far I've only got the ones where the title is in the first sentence?)

6. Catch-22, Joseph Heller

10. Anna Karenina, Tolstoy (or one of those big Russians anyway, dammit)

John - I'm sure you've heard of it. I think I mentioned it elsewhere, as I've been trying to read it for about five years and can't seem to get even a quarter of the way through it!

Not something recent by Salman Rushdie? I say that simply because the fatwa was imposed on him on Valentine's Day 1989 and it's the kind of thing he would do...
