I am constantly amazed, elwood, at the lack of originality of these book cover designers. Are most of these images sourced from one of these photo pools, or do they steal from each other?

Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog gets used everywhere. I think I have it on a CD of the Pastoral Symphony. In Trollhunter one of the camera crew adopts the pose above a rocky valley and says, "look! It's like that painting!".

The cheapest/easiest/laziest option must be using stock images:

Default Spiderwork (cover) / Bewitching (proposed cover)

(from ThePassiveVoice blog)

L.K. Rigel was self-publishing Spiderwork -- she purchased ‘City of Angels’ by artist Nathalie Suellen for the cover -- HarperCollins then also tried to buy ‘City of Angels’ from the artist for the cover of Alex Flinn's Bewitching -- Nathalie Suellen didn't want the same piece of work to appear on more than one book cover -- not discouraged HarperCollins got creative -- some readers informed Rigel about the proposed HarperCollins cover for Flinn's Bewitching -- Suellen contacted HarperCollins about their new cover but received no response.

It now appears they will create a new cover for Bewitching.
And I assume HarperCollins must be happy with all the additional publicity for Flinn's novel.
