Yes, I enjoyed White Teeth enormously, though it goes toward something-or-other to say that I allowed it to float free of my library when I had a recent book clear-out. Probably contaminated by association with The Autograph Man and On Beauty. White Teeth was far from perfect, indeed the last third was a mess, but it had enough youthful verve and energy to keep me entertained for much of its length.

Well, that's the ONLY Conrad I've read and I DID finish it. But I hated it so much I'm still cursing the miserable melodramatic dude!

I'm a serial Conrad unfinisher also. Heart of Darkness I did finish but hated. Lord Jim I enjoyed to begin with but it soon wore off. The Secret Agent I gave up on.

There's clear consensus on this one.
I liked Heart of Darkness but have never tried anything else by Conrad.

Ah Jim, how I sympathise with this as it's identical to my Conrad list! I bought a very beautiful looking (yes yes, bibliophile cover/bindng judgements galore) book entitled The Inheritors a collaboration between Conrad and Ford Madox Ford.

I decided, however, that before I embarked upon that I should read a little of each author's works in order that I might better appreciate the collaboration. Started with Conrad because at least I could name some of his works... sigh oh my goodness, it's taken me four unfinisheds before I hit Heart of Darkness and I've yet to begin any of the Fords... should I even?

Do any Palimpers know Ford Maddox Ford and if so, where should I start?!

It used to be a policy of mine to "finish" a book once I started it, no matter what. As the TBR stack started reaching it's current overwhelming height, I started doing the 50 page limit. If I am not hooked by page 50.........I'm done.
I've tossed quite a few to the side and some of them are very popular books. I to admit that I couldn't read these towers of literary achievement.

1. Infinite Jest by David Wallace
2. The Time Traveler's Wife by, Audry Niffenegger
3. The Document by, Dana Spiotta
4. Satanic Verses by, Salman Rushdie
5. Snow by, Orhan Pamuk (sp. ?)

These are a few that come to mind, I have stopped reading other less popular books and not thought twice of it, but these seem to be popular and well liked. Don't know why I wasn't swept up by any of them.

Wow, who'd have thought the Palimp would be such a realm of Conrad unfinishers! I feel much better now!

Page 1. Stop about page 30. As far as I know the only stuff of his that's easily available is The Good Soldier and the Parade's End trilogy (tetralogy?). Parade's End is too big even to consider reading, and I tried The Good Soldier - oh, how I tried - before giving up about two-thirds of the way through (and it's less than 200 pages long). I've kept it though, as I still have hopes that it will transform into what I want it to be: a Patrick McGrath-ish tale of unreliable narration and unfaithful lovers. Maybe it is.

Oh I left off A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu (Remembrance of Things Past or In Search of Lost Time - the title just doesn't work in English). I think I got about 3/4 of the way through Swann's Way before setting it aside. I might try this again though.

The Good Soldier is up there among my favourites. It does get off to a slowish start but it is all that you hope for, John, plus plenty of intrigue to boot.

I have the Parade's End Trilogy but would rather have it in three separate books as it's too ungainly all in one.
