Punctuate this one then...

Where Peter had had had Paul had had had had had had had had the examiner's preference.

To help you, I've left the apostrophe in "examiner's"... though if there'd been more than one examiner it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to the essential problem of all those damn had-s... (had's?)

Where Peter had had, had Paul had had, had, had had, had, had had the examiner's preference and I'm totally guessing the middle of that! Are even the first two commas correct? Maybe the last one?

Hang on - is this what all those SWAT team members are trying to work out at the end of The Blues Brothers? "Had, had had, had had had..."

Where Peter had had "had," Paul had had "had had." "Had had" had had the examiner's preference.

After much agonising, I think I've come to the same conclusion as John Self.

I've already come to the conclusion that John Self is very clever. But maybe he'd seen it before: it's been around a fair while. Probably longer than John Self.
Here's an easier one, which has been around for as long as I can remember: my dad remembers it from the forties...

Time flies I cannot so uncertain is their flight

And here's a slightly different one that my students always enjoy:

Time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana.

Just missing a hyphen...

That's the only thing that looks sensible to me, although in my experience, fruit flies prefer peaches!
