Default The New Look Board

Ok now what about the look of the new board? I must be frank and say I can't stand it! It's so ugly and inelegant compared with the php Bulletin Board. Some fings wot I hate about it:

1. Those ugly over-detailed notice-board icons to the left of each forum on the main board page (as opposed to the simple single-page-icon) which turns orange when there's a new post. Can the new-posts and no-new-posts icons be changed?

2. The black lines between each forum listing on the main page - can we make them white, or green, or another practically invisible colour? (Visit the old forum page at http://www.palimpsest.org.uk/phpBB2 to be reminded how it used to look.)

3. The way each poster's name and details are now above their post, instead of to the left of it. This adds to that whole everything's-taking-up-too-much-space air, and means much more scrolling when you have a dozen or so messages per page, all being made longer. Can this be moved back?

4. Something about the font makes me think it's bigger and clumsier than the old one, though that may be my imagination.

5. When someone puts their current reading in their heading (using the Current Reading box in your profile) and it contains two or more books, then it widens all their posts and you get the scrolling-across effect (see Digger's posts - sorry Digger!). Can anything be done about this?

So that's my two cents...

I've offered to do this. I just changed the default icons from the horrible blue to green temporarily so that the forum didn't look too messy.

Yes, these can be changed in the forum's stylesheet.

There is a legacy option, dating back to the sidebar style of vBulletin 2. I've nevet used it so can't say if it's something that you can choose for yourself.

You have fat eyes.

There's two things that can be done:
  1. Only put one book in the currently reading;
  2. Wavid can add a div tag, with a restricted width attribute, around it

Feel guilty about making people scroll...

I also don't really like the complicated new logos on the left - and although it's nice to be reminded of where I have posted, the arrow thingy makes it confusing - although that might just be my brain not used to it.

And also agree on the space taken up with the avatar etc above the post rather than to the side.

I'm glad it's still green though.

I also miss the option at the bottom of any page, to jump back to the forum, although the shortcuts drop down box is still there.

I don't get the scrolling across effect JS, it all fits on one, how small is your window?

I am getting used to the new look obviously but it is still more business-like and functional than cosy.

I agree that the icons for New Posts etc to the left of the forums are visually really hard to take, and to decipher as well. The old BB ones were simple and elegant, and obviously orange.

I probably agree about the lines between the different forum listings - if we could possibly delete them and see what it looks like?

With private messages, the access isn't quite as easy as having the Inbox, outbox, Sent items, Saved items buttons.

I think it is coming together but it's early days. But the old Palimp looked cuter and more friendly - an aspect of phpBB boards generally, I guess.

ETA: I have the same scrolling thing, Digger, but that's because I usually have Favourites open. When I close Favourites, everything fits in okay.

Well I'm at work where my screen is quite low-resolution, but at home where it's 1024xwhateveritis, it should be OK.

What sort of icons do you think would be best for the left hand side?
