He peered through the rifle scope, scanning the battlefield ruins for his nemesis. Lying amidst the rubble, his mentor’s words echoed within him: if you see the flash from his barrel, then you’re already dead...There was more, but he was distracted by a sudden glint—

Erik carefully laid his axe by the door and sat down heavily at the small table in the round hut.

“What are you doing?” Gunhilda asked curiously, peering over his shoulder.

“I’m writing a mini-saga”, Erik grunted, with furrowed brow.

“And HQ said this would be easy,” Hollister complained from the gunner’s seat.

MacIntyre ignored him, struggling with the flight controls. Hollister glanced back at the micro-nuke’s shockwave.

“Getting closer”.

Suddenly the boosters reignited, launching them toward the horizon.

“This is the last time we volunteer for anything, okay, Hollister?”

My first attempt - this is taken from something bigger, and has suffered, I think, from being cut down. This is harder than it looks:

“Where is she?”

His voice was icy, tense. Outside, an evening mist was forming. The trees were bare and eerily still.

Laura looked up, her face streaming with tears. She pointed at the window.

He looked out, and across the mist he could see her, skipping through the fallen leaves.

This one's a true story (I think it's 50):

I watched the dark sky. The flashes lit up the cloud. Later, thunder was audible, and increasingly at one with the lightning. A simultaneous flash and roar heralded the intense rain and road-bound torrent. Soon, the rain eased, the thunder stopped and eventually the silent flashes became still. I left.

Why, thank you, joy! I'm quite flattered. Other than school work, like research papers and essays, I don't often allow my writing to be read by others. Receiving feedback for a lil' 50-word story is a therefore a major event for me!
