I'm sure the first time I came across it was in The Rotters' Club.

Written on the body is a secret code only visible in certain lights; the accumulations of a lifetime gather there. In places the palimpsest is so heavily worked that the letters feel like braille. I like to keep my body rolled up away from prying eyes. Never unfold too much, tell the whole story. I didn't know Louise would have reading hands. She has translated me into her own book.
That of course is from Written On The Body by Jeanette Winterson.
I am pleased and quite surprised to see that my local branch library has Winterson's full line-up on the shelves. You should see some of the stuff in here...
I like this book very much indeed, superb writing. Winterson's voice is hauntingly clear and beautiful. Also lonely somehow, maybe that's the 'haunting' part. I'm reminded of the soloist in a children's choir.

Saw this in the local rag on Friday and for a second thought "am I supposed to be doing something, then?"

Thanks Coly and Rick and John. I'm not really "back", not yet, maybe in the fall. For now I'm only checking in once in a while, using a public library computer. I miss you all and I think in the end I will break down, get a computer and internet connection - although it's amazing how many more hours there are in the day, this way. Toodle-oo.

I found a Palimpsest in Paul Auster's NY trilogy, where he's writing in a red notebook while walking around and finds that he has created "an illegible palimpsest".

I found a 'palimpest' in Ian McEwan's Saturday.

Gore Vidal's autobiography is entitled Palimpsest: A Memoir.

I forgot to add, I know this as I'm currently reading Mr Vidal's Julian. And very good it is too.
