Put it like this. if I read that in a short story collection, I'd come away satisfied, amused at the droll way the author had created a pompous, narcistic narrator who eternally berates others for failing to appreciate his genius. Even though his 'genius' is, on the available evidence, of a very third rate sort.

Which is why I was a bit hesitant at first, in case it was a genuine cry of pain from your aching, fustrated heart ...

Well, that was my intention, so maybe we're okay here...

Here's an idea of sorts. You've heard of concept albums? Well, here's the concept collection of short stories. Imagine an ENTIRE collection written in the same vein - reviews, short stories, extracts like the above, essays and so on.

Each article is prefaced by the letter of the author submitting it to publishers of various sorts, and then each one followed by its letter of rejection. And possibly increasingly demented and vituperative correspendence as said author refuses to take no for an answer.

You could even blur the lines between fact and fiction by submitting the stories for real, and publishing actual rejection letters. Though that runs the risk of them actually being published, which would be amusing, initially, and possibly profitable, but ultimately very depressing.

Not bad - how about this variation as a light-hearted Palimp writing project:

Start a features thread called Rejection Letters. One post per player - at least for now - in which you invent a Publisher and reject an unnamed submission from an unnamed writer, offering "constructive" advice or criticism along the way. The object is that the thread presumably consist of rejections of the same piece of material, but the actual letters can contradict each other on the implied details as much as you like. The more amusing, the better.

Any aspect of the basic format is open for tweaking ("Dear sir"/"supplicant"/whatever you think is funny), but it has to at least look like a letter. For example:
Quote:
PUBLISHER
ADDRESS
ADDRESS
ADDRESS

DATE
Dear LABEL,

BLAH-DE-BLAH.
CRITICISM.
ADVICE.

Yrs HOWEVER,

RESPONDER'S NAME
RESPONDER'S TITLE
Then, when a sufficient number of letters have been added to the pile, you can start responding to resubmissions of modified drafts - again, of this unspecified text - from your chosen fake publisher.

Sorry for the hijacking, Bill!

Oddly, the title I'd imagined for the story collection Bill is now going to write was The Rejection Letters. Great minds, fools ...

Noumenon, that sounds like a really good project that isn't off-puttingly demanding. I'm in.

Right, done - let's try and keep the thread clear of anything but letters for the sake of "authenticity", eh?

EDIT: Why do I have the feeling that I've seen this game somewhere before? Hope it wasn't somewhere else in the Palimp...

EDITedit: ...which means this is probably the third time I've suggested it.

I'm busy writing a couple of articles today, but I'll make a contribution at the weekend at the very latest.
