Flann O'Brien, The Third Policeman

Quote:
But he was still troubled by thoughts of Sarah. His love for her perched inside him, motionless, like a sick bird. For many weeks he continued to think about her painfully. And then one day, without warning, the bird left its perch inside him and flew away into the outer darkness and he was at peace. Yet even many years later he would sometimes think of her. And once or twice he thought he glimpsed her in the street.

Nope! That one, if I remember, ends with a plea to God that "you've caused me enough pain. Leave me alone for ever."

Also no.

It has a Booker Prize connection once removed, in two respects. It's by the author of a Booker winner, and this year's Booker winner is a fan of this book.

This is infuriating, as it seems rather familiar, and the clues are tantalising. Could it be something by John Banville?

Male author, 1935-1979. If you read the Anne Enright interview on the Man Booker website, you'll get it very easily.
