Barenaked Ladies are my all time favourite band. They wrap their intelligent darkness in shimmery pop rock and humour, plus, whoo, they are astonishingly good live where they freestyle and dance better than anyone else ever (FACT.)
I would suggest that whilst Brian Wilson is good What a good boy is even better!

I didn't know that Neil Young was Canadian!

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot has long been a treasured 45.

But the most oft played track by a Canadian artist in this house is the incomparable William Shatner's unprovoked assault on Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds - which, if you have never experienced it is here (only everso slightly mashed up).

Oooh, I dunno. Mr Gift Of Gab is pretty sharp, and I've heard some bootleg tapes of Eminem in his early days - the kid could lay it on pretty thick. I also rather like G. Love's abilities in freestyle mode, but I'll admit it's pretty crude.

At any rate, I certainly cooncur with your high praise for BNL. Great they are indeed, and they're also particularly loud and cheery copyfighters, of which I approve muchly.

Agreed, absolutely brilliant! I thought I had listed it on my top ten covers, but maybe not.

I also like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald...there are so many great GL songs-hard to pick a favourite.

Any Canadian top ten list for songs is not complete without "My My, Hey Hey." And then there is "The Trees" by Rush. I don't think another band could pull off a song where the trees are personified and fighting for sunlight. I sing it in my head every time I see a nice tree, isn't that terrible.

There are a lot of recent wonderful Canadian artist, too.

Matt Good and The Arcade Fire top my list.

Here is my top ten Canadian:

1. The Tragically Hip - At the Hundredth Meridian
2. Neil Young - Heart of Gold
3. Rush - Closer to the Heart
4. Leonard Cohen - The Future
5. Leonard Cohen - Tower of Song
6. Neil Young - Cowgirl in the Sand
7. Neil Young - My My, Hey Hey
8. The Arcade Fire - Rebellion
9. Protest the Hero - Blindfolds Aside
10. Shania Twain - Man! I feel like a woman! (Never, I am joking)
10. The Former Hockey Song (What bullocks, as you Brits say. I can't believe we are getting a new song. Here is some redneck Canadian spirit - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it").

Goose, I really like the Tragically Hip, though I don't know their stuff as well as I'd like to. "Fiddler's Green" is an amazing song.

And even though Warren Zevon wasn't Canadian, do you know "Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)"? I think it's very Canadian in spirit, and you might want to check it out.

I haven't heard that song. Thanks for letting me know Bill, I will check it out for sure.

And The Hip are amazing. "Fiddler's Green" is great. The entire Road Apples album is. That's always a good place to start if you are new to the band.

Their hard hitting rock stuff, along with New Orleans is Sinking, is on Up to Here. My favorite album is Trouble at the Henhouse, which has songs like Ahead by a Century and Springtime in Vienna. I recommend those to you Bill if you want to get in touch with your Hip side.

I have Road Apples and Up to Here ("New Orleans is Sinking" is terrific), but I'm one of those people who listens to the same few songs from a given album over and over again, so I know "Trickle Down", "Another Midnight" and "Long Time Running", as well as the ones I've already mentioned, far better than I do the rest of either album. I should remedy that, and check out Trouble at the Henhouse. Thanks for the recommendation, and let me know what you think of that Zevon song.

Let's not forget Wheat Kings and Locked in the Trunk of a Car and Grace, Too and Little Bones and Bobcageon and... well, their entire freakin' discography!
