Default Re: Top 10 TV theme tunes

Been thinking about this all day. Seeing as I don't watch much TV these days my main criteria for choosing would have to be memorability and the instant nostalgia hit that hearing them gives me. There are a thousand TV shows I have watched over the years that I cannot for the life of me remember the music. For every Kojak, Dallas, Streets of San Fransico that I can just about drag out of the back of my memory there are a hundred that escape me totally Cannon, Harry O, Petrocelli, The Man From Atlantis, Land of the Giants, the Time Tunnel etc. etc. (I suspect only Gil has a clue what I'm talking about here).

So, things that instantly time travel me, or get me genuinely excited I am about to watch the show...
  1. Hawaii five Oh. Crap programme, great theme.
  2. The Avengers
  3. Space 1999 Utterly crap programme, great theme.
  4. Thunderbirds
  5. Stingray
  6. Hill Street Blues
  7. The end credits of Eastenders that thuddingsynthy OMG! drumbeat played over the final shot is sheer genius.
  8. Farscape First series. I wasn't too enamoured of the later slight re-workings.
  9. Twin Peaks
  10. But the best and Greatest All time brilliant TV Theme Tune of all time is : BATMAN dinnadinnadinnadinna! BATMAN! I will brook no argument. There is no other TV Theme that gets the pace and feel of the show over so quickly and succinctly and there is no way on earth you could forget what the show was called.
Nearly made its include: BattleStar Galactica (1980s version), Star Trek Voyager, Honk Kong Phoey, Mastermind, I Claudius, The Water Margin, Quincy...

Not just gil. I loved Petrocelli and The Man from Atlantis in particular.

Good choices too, JM.

Does anyone remember Captain Zeppos, mid-sixties? It was on Mondays, just after I got home from school, and I can still hear the theme-tune now... According to this web-site, it was Bert Kaempfert's "Living It Up".
The programme, according to the same site, was a Belgian import... recommended as being

I loved the themes from I Dream of Jeanie and Gilligan's Island. Just about haven't watched it since then!

I hated this show as a kid - I was about 11 in 1970 - I remember being acutely embarrassed by it. I haven't thought about it for years and was prompted to look it up here after a post on one of the message boards, but I remember that even at the time it struck me as being so phony - like a kid's version of the whole phony "Swinging London" scene.

I was surprised to find it was made in the UK because I have the memory of it being so American. Even back then it felt to me like an American idea of what British kids would be like. (Sort of like a lot of bonzaid Dick Van Dykes from Mary Poppins.

Even worse than it's American gloss I remember hating it for the fact that it had Melvyn Hayes in it. I'm sure Melvyn is a very nice man and gets on well with his neighbours but there was something about him that made me want to throw the TV out the window and scream obscenities at it as it plummeted to the ground. Especially in that damn commercial where the girl in the mini-moke takes an apple from his stall.

Argh!

I loved it. Loved Tiger and all of them. Maybe aged 11 I would have disliked it too but as a four or five or six year old in north Sheffield who knew nothing of Swinging London, it was an exciting gang hanging out in a brilliant den.

Yep, the beep beep thing was a fabulous way of tying up each story. As they were normally rather low-key or melancholy at the end, it fitted just perfectly.
