Any Other World by Mika.

Which was playing on the car CD player at the very moment an (at the time) rather devastating medical condition overtook our older daughter on the back seat of the car. Now it chokes us both up, even though she is - fingers crossed - perfectly healthy again.

Does it every time

Reminded of this because she went to a Mika concert last night.

I love this aria from Cosi fan Tutte, it's really beautiful, but I think sad. I was struck recently by its aptness when used in The House of Mirth, when Lily goes on the cruise......

For obvious reasons, anything by Sparklehorse makes me want to blubber like a girl.

Great article, thanks for posting.

I don't know if you're already aware of this, but the Sparklehorse/ Danger Mouse/ David Lynch collaboration is streaming for free (and legally) online here. It's fantastic.

Me too. Damnit, it's just so... linear. Somehow, you don't expect someone who makes music like that to actually do it.

Still remember seeing him live back in 2001 or so. He did a version of "Spirit Ditch" that sounded like he was hanging on by his fingernails. Amazing. And so very sad.

I have to say I wasn't suprised when Vic Chesnutt killed himself. But I was surprised by Mark doing it. I thought he'd put a lot of the bad stuff behind him and took the title of It's A Wonderful Life quite literally. That, and Belly of a Mountain seemed to much more relaxed than his earlier stuff, and much more reconciled to this whole being alive lark.

No Moz?

How about:

Every Day's Like Sunday, Morrissey

and:

Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, David Grey cover of Soft Cell

Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Bob Dylan, from the movie soundtrack Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid

Elton John, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word- oldie but goodie

REM, Me 'N Honey- Frenetic beat but brings tears to my eyes.

The Carpenters, Goodby to Love. Listening to Karen Carpenter singing "No one ever cared if I should live, or die" chokes me up.

In no particular order, again:

"Il a Perdu Son Idee," ("He Lost His Mind," more or less), I THINK by Vin Bruce, a Cajun perennial which is played as a slow waltz.

"Shannon," by Henry Gross

"Cat's Cradle," by Harry Chapin

"Fast Car," by Tracy Chapman

"Silent Running," by Mike and the Mechanics

"Wooden Ships," by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," by Joan Baez

"Abraham, Martin and John," by Dion

"Sam Stone," by John Prine

"Veracruz," by Warren Zevon
