I just googled this one (the first search result is this thread). Never would have guessed it, even though I've read the book. A nice and surprising ending.

Hi, I'm here. And I've just realised that the line I've provided is not the last line of the book in question, but the last line of the first chapter of another book by that same author. Dizzy as ever, I don't have the book with me so can't give you the correct last line. Sigh. Sometimes it's such hard work! I'll try and google for it...
