Following on from my 2007 List, I'm going to keep a necessarily title-free record of the quality of feature film scripts which I read and report on for the UK industry:
3
0
5
6
12
As of December 30th, and I'm going to guess that that is that for 2008: only 8 acceptable efforts out of 26. Not a good ratio. Those at the top were really good though, so that's something at least. I guess.

Col's Reading List 2008: usual system and red stars, if it's the very best ever!
And including books for the over 11's in case anyone is interested in these

107. No Time For Goodbye - Linwood Barclay
106. The Book of Lost Things - John Connelly - Decidedly average
105. Abarat - Clive Barker (read to daughter)
104. The Beltheron Pathway - Chris Connaughton ½
103. H.I.V.E. - Mark Walden
102. what the birds see - Sonya Hartnett Review here
101. Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer Entire Twilight series review here
100. Eclipse - Stephenie Meyer
99. New Moon - Stephenie Meyer
98. Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
97. Mothstorm - Philip Reeve Review here
96. The Road Home - Rose Tremain Mini-review here
95. Pictures in the Dark - Gillian Cross
94. Little Brother - Cory Doctorow
93. Engleby - Sebastian Faulks ½ It nearly got that extra half-star but the ending was v weak. Mini-review here
92. Absalom, Absalom! - William Faulkner /½ Review here
91. Attention All Shipping - John Connelly Too many "trying to be funny" asides, which were not funny.
90. Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire - Amanda Foreman ½
89. Unwind - Neal Shusterman ½ Review here
88. The Ghost's Child - Sonya Hartnett
87. The Traitor Game - BR Collins Review here
86. Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynne Jones ½ (read to daughter)
85. The Mother & Daughter Diaries - Clare Shaw ½ How to let go
84. The Road of the Dead - Kevin Brooks Not what I thought it was. Predictable.
83. The Prophet of Yonwood - Jeanne duPrau ½ Prequel schmeequel my foot! Tedious super-naive protagonist.
82. Giovanni's Room - James Baldwin
81. Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card ½
80. Barkbelly - Cat Weatherall
79. Dangling Man - Saul Bellow ½
78. Fade - Robert Cormier
77. The Penderwicks on Gardam Street - Jeanne Birdsall
76. Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox - Eoin Colfer ½
75. The Professor of Desire - Philip Roth
74. Black Swan Green - David Mitchell ½
73. The Invention of Morel - Adolfo Bioy Casares
72. Avalon High - Meg Cabot Predictable tale of US teen reincarnations of Arthurian folk.
71. The Good Soldier - Ford Madox Ford
70. Queen of Babble - Meg Cabot The Jilly Cooper de nos jours, but strangely more steamy and explicit, considering it's for 15/16 yr olds. Ditzy girl finally gets her handsome hunk, heir to French winery, after mistakes, confessions and rivals.
69. As Meat Loves Salt - Maria McCann Very strong characterisation and grounding in 1646; Maybe an extra half-star later. Review here
68. The Small Back Room - Nigel Balchin ½ Got stronger as it went along, in fabulous build-up of character to gutting finale....
67. The Story of a Marriage - Andrew Sean Greer Beginning to feel even that third star is generous. Review here
66. Breathing Lessons - Anne Tyler ½ Review here
65. The New World Order - Ben Jeapes Review here
64. The Rationalist - Warwick Collins ½
63. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
62. The Moon of Gomrath - Alan Garner Less magical and more dated than it used to be...how I loved thee, Albanac!...
61. The Penderwicks - Jeanne Birdsall ½
60. Cal - Bernard MacLaverty
59. Do Nothing To Change Your Life - Stephen Cottrell Short but neat clues to stopping and pausing in life, with a definite Christian thread, which can be appreciated if theistic, ignored if not.
58. Recipes for Cherubs - Babs Horton A girly novel with more questions than answers.
57. Shakespeare My Butt! - John Donoghue More amusing than I thought and stuffed with Co Durham local detail to boot.
56. The Mysterious Burnchester Hall - Dominic Mieville The worst ever book in the history of books. So poorly written I could have plucked my eyes out. Review here
55. Parade's End - Ford Madox Ford From the previous awful book to the sublimity of this one: I can't get over how tremendous this is, even 3rd time around.
54. The Valley of Secrets - Charmian Hussey Dire from the first sentence.
53. Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont - Elizabeth Taylor
52. Human Traces - Sebastian Faulks Pretty poor really. Having a child with conversion disorder, it was a pleasant sci investigation of mind interacting with matter but facile in other respects.
51. News of England - Beverley Nichols More uneven essays on the status and state of the nation, imperialism, the national character. Not a lot has changed.
50. Cry Havoc! - Beverley Nichols ½ Essays from 1933 on the evils of the armament industry and impending warfare: esp. focusing on the dire consequences of chemical warfare.
49. Waking Dream - Rhiannon Lassiter Tosh of the posh clever-clever kind.
48. A Thatched Roof - Beverley Nichols Wonderful uplifting accounts of Allways Cottage - guaranteed to make me happy.
47. Permanent Rose - Hilary McKay
46. All Bones and Lies - Anne Fine Fine at her acerbic best; richly observed and satisfying.
45. Fearless - Tim Lott A strange Wildean fairytale about oppression and freedom.
44. God's Own Country - Ross Raisin ½ Review here
43. Percy Jackson & the Titan's Curse - Rick Riordan ½ Replaying the same old, same old, waiting for Cronos to appear and Luke to be sacrificed.
42. A Star Called Henry - Roddy Doyle ½ The first half was , then it drifted. Some thoughts here
41. Light in August - William Faulkner Review here
40. The Richness of Life - Stephen Jay Gould (one essay at a time, so an on-going long-term project)
39. Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters - Rick Riordan
38. God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? - John Lennox Review here
37. The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde ½ Not as funny on a second reading.
36. Get Out of My Life, But First Take Me and Alex into Town: A Parents Guide to the New Teenager -Anthony Wolf & Suzanne Franks
35. Anil's Ghost - Michael Ondaatje ½ Being generous with the extra half star...
34. Spindle's End - Robin McKinley ½ Not enough plot, and meanderingly convoluted as the magic it describes.
33. The Uncommon Reader - Alan Bennett
32. Indigo Star - Hilary McKay ½ Not as focused on Indigo as it ought to be, but still good.
31. Lady: My Life as a Bitch - Melvin Burgess
30. Dawkin's God: Genes, Memes and the Meaning of Life - Alister McGrath
29. The Lives of Christopher Chant - Diana Wynne Jones ½ (read to daughter)

9. The 21st Century Brain - Steven Rose
