Default Book 18: NO ONE WRITES TO THE COLONEL by Gabriel Garc*a Márquez

Here's the thread for October's book. Will sticky it nearer the start date. I got my copy through from Amazon today.

It's 69 pages long. 69!!!!!!!!! There isn't even an introduction to pad it out a bit. Bastards. The back of the book states the RRP is £7.99. At least I only paid £6.50. For 69 pages! There might be some people for whom £6.50 for a 69 is good value, but I'm not one of them.

Philistine! I've just given five stars to George Saunders's The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil, which at 115 small pages of large text, is probably the same length as No-one Writes to the Colonel. Small is beautiful! With a small book you have a high chance of it being flawless - not so with fat whoppers (further evidenced in my current read, Zadie Smith's truly mediocre 450-pager On Beauty). So thin is in, mate!

Oh, I agree entirely that brevity is A Good Thing! It's the price that I have an issue with!

Couldn't they have published it as a Penguin 70 thing or summat?

Any chance of my borrowing your copy, Wavid? £6.50 is too steep for me to contend with, and it isn't available in any of our county's libraries.

Yes, of course! You could probably photocopy it at the library for less than the cover price...

Well we've got another five weeks, as discussion runs through all of October! But no, it won't take you long.
