For info, when clearing, them, go to Find All Posts By User and use the inline moderation to select all their posts and Delete Posts as Spam option. Much quicker than what I think you were doing (i.e. delete user, and then delete each post individually.)
I was clicking on a single post and "Deleting Post as Spam" (which includes all other posts by the same user). I was making a note of the IP address, then deleting the posts and the user or banning them. Then I copied up all the IP addresses into Banned IP's. Then I did Mass Deletes from the "Prune Users" option, putting 0 and 1 as the figures. It was still quite wearing though

I daresay the IP addresses are masked, hence why they are all over the place.

Something recently seemed to re-set the filters to the old CAPTCHA image system - I think! - which is why so much spam was occurring again. I have attempted to re-set the system with "questions", which might, I am hoping, keep the flood of spam at bay.

Well, I'm doing a bit of guesswork as to the kind of question that will catch out spam-bots but allow through human responses, but it seems to be working so far!
