Nearly half way through... though interesting from the start, it's only at this point I would say I am intrigued. This is not a long book so it's not a problem...

Okay... I've finished... don't have a clue what to say. What a strange book. Intrigue gave way to confusion.

I also can't think how I'm going to rate it in my palimplist.

Heheh. Maybe give it some time to let some thoughts crystallize, but please share whatever you think. I haven't reread it yet (though recalled from my friend) but remember it well enough to join in the conversation - I've read it several times, and the first time aged 14. There is a thread devoted to Cosmos in the Book Reviews section, but I'm not linking because it would be nice if this one took a different direction, going places rick and I (main contributors there on this novel) haven't noticed.

Well, okay, well, umm... here's a summary: A young adult finds linked meanings in just about everything and gets it terribly wrong and then it rains and he snaps out of it.

or:

Be careful what meaning you attach to small things. It could make you want to murder someone.

It appears I have read the wrong translation. Do you think it would have mattered that much?

Ang, did you have the Borchardt translation? That's the one I will be reading if it ever comes in. Arf, only a few copies of this in the entire state and all up around Chicago.

Nope, I don't have that translation... I had to go way back in the thread to realize that's that I was supposed to get and that was after I read the wrong book... by the time the final list was chosen, even the authors weren't specified in the post, let alone the translator!

Anyway, I don't know where people are getting the Borchardt translation - Amazon doesn't sell it. My book purchased from amazon includes Cosmos and Pornografia in one volume, translated by Eric Mosbacher and Alastair Hamilton.

Yes, I saw that combined version for sale on Amazon here. I had to go to my alma mater and schmooze the head librarian into getting it for me. I'm not usually an aficionado of postmodern lit but am looking forward to this.

I don't actually understand what postmodern lit is. My copy describes Cosmos as a metaphysical thriller. I don't know what that is either. Could be why I'm not sure how to take this book?

I studied mathematics, not literature. I don't want to "study" a book - I want to enjoy it. I love a book that makes me think, but not one that makes me think I'm taking a test.
