Default Cheryl and Ashley

I know I said only yesterday that I wouldn't be back in the Politics & Society thread anytime soon, but I have a question.

With no kids involved, are we allowed to sit back and enjoy the sight of the Geordie Bog Basher and Cashly knocking chunks out of each other? The Times certainly thinks so.

They're good targets, no?

Yes, it's all fun. One overpaid bloke and one undertalented lass; what's not to love in that car crash, popcorn munching way?

What struck me was that I don't remember even seeing any of the story leading up to the separation on the BBC. I was vaguely aware of it due to headlines on the The Sun as I walked past the vendor at the train station - one day it was Ash, one day it was Cheryl - and, aside from putting two and two together, the story had otherwise passed me by. I just guessed it wasn't so much news, as the red tops digging through personal lives again.

I think they have enough publicity. Cheryl might be labelled the Nation's Sweetheart but she isn't mine, and I don't want to know details of all the stuff that caused the break-up or the fall-out, including any new partners. They get millions in publicity from Hello! and such for every move they make anyway, and the papers will make their money out of it as usual.

oops! Corrected, ta.

I'm with Col...the Nation's Sweetheart, my arse. Or, elsewhere, The Angel of the North. Harrumph, I say.

It's mean-spirited, but a little schadenfreude should be indulged in, I think.

PS. and just so Ashley doesn't feel left out.

My concern is that they'll become the new Peter Andre and Jordan, on magazine covers and TV trailers literally every other day, so you can't avoid them unless you never go out and never stay in.

I know zilch about football and footballers, but Cashley Cole is always marked, for me, by the story (we know it's true because he wrote about it himself in his memoir) that he almost crashed his car when his agent told him that he was being asked to take a pay cut to £55,000 a week.

Otherwise, like Stewart, my BBC and Guardian-based news ingestion means I don't hear any of the run-up to these things - ditto Tiger Woods and, er, Vernon Kay - except through Twitter and the like.

Fair point. Broadsheets are enjoying this now, too, of course.

I expect Twitter has trended this quite heavily, has it?

I had to have both people explained to me by the wife, but on the whole I feel sorry for 'em.

Unlike some people, (Jordan springs to mind) they don't seem to court the paparrazzi too much, but now there's just no escaping them. I saw the same rubbish photo of her getting into a car in about six papers yesterday, full-page half the time. No need! I've a friend who has to duck every time he leaves wherever he's staying for similar reasons, and I don't envy it at all.
