I remember flying to Belfast airport once during the major troubles. The pilot announced. "We are landing shortly in Northern Ireland. The local time is 1690"

Looks like there has been some trouble in Northern Ireland recently (small 't' so far, it seems).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_...d/10609517.stm

What have our on-the-spot palimpers got to say about it all? Over-reported? Under-reported?

Having only visited Belfast once, when the folks I was with seemed to say this kind of thing is always on the verge of kicking off, I've wondered for a while what the truth of it all is. Though I guess a whole library couldn't fully describe the nuances of opinion and history of the whole place.

Anyway, I wonder what the locals make of it all? Anything to report, at the end of the day?
I've actually returned to NI this morning having been in London since the afternoon of the 12th, so I've missed local news coverage for the most part.

Some sort of flashpoint at marching season is to be expected and in itself is not too much to be worried about in a divided society, I wouldn't have said. There is blame to be shared on all sides I think; I don't see why it would be such a big problem for the parade organisers to voluntarily avoid flashpoints, even when they appear on traditional routes. Nevertheless, if it is true that Republicans have travelled to the Ardoyne from places far afield (such as Dungannon and Armagh, according to a radio report I heard earlier), then it does demonstrate that people will travel a long way to be offended. It is likely that the truly malevolent will do all they can to encourage youngsters to take part and it's this which leads to the phenomenon of 'recreational rioting.'

Overall, I don't think things will return to the very worst of the bad old days, but it would seem that dissident Republicans are certainly intent on an intensification of their campaign. There are a number of key bridges which would need to be crossed for their activity to gain any sort of legitimacy amongst the lay Nationalist public though, or before it drew a response from armed Loyalists. I would tentatively - and perhaps optimistically - surmise that we are some way from any of those bridges being crossed.

There is a toilet cubicle graffito in Great Victoria St station in Belfast which says 'REMEMBER 1690.' Beneath it another observer has written 'Sorry, I wasn't born.'

Oh my heavens. I guess I'll just have to stand aside and let you all enjoy this one.

EDIT:

Yeah, my brother dropped this guy in my eyes' lap a few days ago. Along with something I'm about to put on the Wonderful Web World thread in five, four, three...

I'm so glad some other thoughtful YouTuber took the time to add subtitles. I thought I couldn't understand what he was saying but, no, it seems he actually wasn't making much sense.

My sister-in-law comes from Tennessee. I wonder if she still has a vote there.
