Default Irritating writing styles.

Is there any style of writing which makes the hairs on your neck bristle and your teeth involuntarily gnash? I can't stand it when people pepper their writing with exclamation marks. Too many exclamation marks are the stylistic equivalent of a halitosis-ridden bore at a party who insists on trapping you in a corner with lots of unfunny anecdotes. I don't mean the occasional exclamation mark at the end of a comment, but those people who insist on spraying them about as if to remind the reader to laugh in the appropriate places. I can't think of any comic writers who use exclamation marks liberally so it's funny that some people who purport to read a lot still pollute their prose with bucketloads of the things. It's a bit like people who laugh loudly at their own unfunny jokes. Exhausting and tedious.

Do you mean txt spk, or forum speak, Leyla?

Only, I hardly ever come across the ! in the printed word, and shudder whenever it happens, but it's a pretty rare occurrance (although some of the Victorian authors employed it a lot).

As one who is somewhat guilty of using too many exclamation marks... I find people who write using txt spk abbreviations terribly annoying. I've thankfully never found a book of it, but people using it in emails, or worse, letters or notes find me in a haze of red mist of annoyance!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having relatively recently finished Heart of Darkness, Conrad seemed to use a rather annoying quantity of half sentances. It gave the story the authenticity of flowing thought and a story being told as if you were listening, but it did make it hard to follow.

I agree about the txt spk. It makes people seem a bit hlf wttd. Lack of paragraphs gets up my nose, as does poor grammar. And of course, the misuse of the apostrophe.

Short sentences.

Interspersed with gaps.

Used for dramatic effect.

Gets on my tits.
