And Will Self's Dorian, too, of course, which is very gay. The Long Firm is a bit misleading really, you're right JS. Harry has a penchant for 'that sort of carry on' but really, you may as well put Complicity in there for the adolescent hand job scene if that's going to be your criteria.

And where's A Hand-Reared Boy, eh? Eh?

And what about Forster's Maurice and Edmund White A Boy's Own Story?

I wouldn't necessarily consider it a gay novel but Michael Cunningham's The Hours definitely carries the theme throughout the book.

Looking at the Big Gay Read website (BBC News Online picked up on the story today), they have an additional list of 'recommended' (ie by them, not the plebs) gay and lesbian novels for anyone wanting to expand their reading... It's basically the same list but with the following additions:

I leafed through this one, maybe it's good, I don't know, I just wasn't interested. But I really like Nocturnes for the King of Naples.

What of Mann's Death in Venice? Not a novel, of course, but surely as long as Brokeback Mountain. Or what of Myra Breckenridge by Gore Vidal... or do we need a special category for novels on transexual film critics?

Virginia Woolf's Orlando - Orlando changes gender overnight part-way through the novel in some unexplained fashion (and also somehow travels in time) then falls in love. It's completely bonkers and the story meanders like mad, so I'm not surprised it didn't make it to the top 10 but it's one for consideration at least.

The best 'gay' novel I've ever read is without doubt Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man. It's in my personal top ten, was the author's favourite of his own works and Edmund White named it the founding text of modern gay literature.

It's also very funny, sad and true.

It's not an English-language novel, but Zhu Tianwen's Notes of a Desolate Man is a pretty startlingly brilliant and unusual meditation on desire, ethics, alienation, mortality, and the other goodies of humanity in the late 20th c. I'd consider it a "gay novel" though it was written by a generally straight woman. It takes homosexuality, and its repression, as our basic condition.

I read a PDF of "Brokeback Mountain" that seemed extremely short and really more of an exercise than a polished work. Did Proulx write anything else with gay characters or exploring same sex relationships?
