I love it when old threads re-emerge from the primordial hinterland.

In the several (wow! 6!) years since I posted Space 1999 as one of my top ten I have come to realise that I should qualify it to read Space 1999 (series one). The reworked series two music goes off the boil and just doesn't have it.

- The instrumental intro theme to "Star Trek: The Next Generation," which has much more martial flair than ST:TOS's theme. Come to think of it, the crew of the Enterprise 1701-D handed out much more richly-deserved butt-kicking than did Kirk's ship.
Both written for films: M*A*S*H (obviously) and the Star Trek: TNG theme was written for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

If you say so - Space:1999 aired here in the States during my sophomore year in college, when my TV viewing was way down (exploration of the wonderful world of women after lecture hours having first priority at that time). Wasn't aware that the Andersons had played with the theme music in year two, thanks for the info.

But the theme for M*A*S*H, the TV series was acoustic guitar with an orchestral background, and no lyrics, not the haunting vocal performance by Loudon Wainwright III from the movie. Which was CBS's loss, in my humble opinion.

... and coming back to it post the recent riches of Scandi Noir on the BBC, I think we have to now add the haunting theme to 'The Bridge', no?

Anyone like this (or the series)?

It's the kaleidoscope as much as the tune, I suppose. I find my eyes slip out of focus about ten seconds in, and the next thing I know the episode is over. But I remember it perfectly...

You can't hypnotise a person to do what they wouldn't already be willing to do.
