Default Beat That Intro 1

A quiz for y'all to wrangle over before the weekend.

I've always enjoyed the Beat That Intro / Spot That Intro round in any given pub quiz, and pride myself on my otherwise useless skill with it. Tricky to do a Palimpsestarian version, though, without an awful lot of audio editing.

So here's an idea instead. I've taken a lot of intros to songs which feature spoken dialogue, either swiped from a film or TV show or other recording, or spoken by the artists themselves before embarking on the tune proper. Some songs are truly dreadful, some are very well known, some are pretty old, some are brilliant, some are really old, some are rarities that probably only I know - but I reckon the assembled ranks of the Palimp are pretty sharp and will have them all before long. Many of them - because this is me writing the quiz - fall into that vaguest of schools of music: the Old Hip Hop one. But don't worry: not all of them, and almost all of them have been hit songs in the singles chart at one time or another. Almost all of them.

Anyway, read the intro, guess the artist and song. Here's an example:
Man: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash.
It is, of course, almost any song by Johnny Cash. But anyway, I'm sure you get the idea. I've got links ready poised and ready to unroll should any of you get the answers right, and remember folks, we need the artist and the song title, please!

Oh, I'm pretty sure one of these intros is used in at least two different songs (depending on how you happen to own those songs) so I'll be mean and say you have to guess the one I'm thinking of.

Good luck!
1
(click, clunk, rustle, click)
Man 1: Liam. Someone on the phone for you.
Man 2:
Fuck's sake. I'm trying to write this fucking tune, man...
Prodigy - Poison (Last.fm)
Prodigy - Poison (YouTube)

2
Man: Everybody be cool, this is a robbery!
Woman: Any of you fucking pricks move, and I'll execute every motherfucking last one of you!

Fun Loving Criminals - Scooby Snacks (Last.fm)
Fun Loving Criminals - Scooby Snacks (YouTube)

3
Woman: I'd like to do a song of great social and political import. (Pause) It goes like this.

Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz

4
Man: Here's my advice to all amateurs planning to give a performance: Speak up, and keep the act moving.

5
Man: We're so glad to see so many of you lovely people here tonight, and we would especially like to welcome all the representatives of Illinois' Law Enforcement Community who have chosen to join us here in the Palace Hotel Ballroom at this time. We do sincerely hope you'll all enjoy the show, and please remember people, that no matter who you are, and what you do to live, thrive and survive, there are still some things that make us all the same. You, me them, everybody, everybody.

Blues Brothers - Everybody Needs Somebody To Love

6
Man: Who's that walking around here? Mercy. Sounds like baby patter. Baby elephant patter, that's what I calls it!

Fats Waller - Feet's Too Big (an odd video, but it's the right song!)

7
Man: I've heard people say that too much of anything is not good for you, baby. Oh no, but I don't know about that. There's many times that we've loved - We've shared love and made love. It doesn't seem to me like it's enough. There's just not enough of it. There's just not enough. Oh oh, babe.

Barry White - Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe

8
Man: Ready? One. You will do this four times with the left, four with the right, then eight times with both, then repeat.

Beastie Boys - Body Movin

9
Man: C'm'ere baby. You know you drive me up a wall the way you make good on all the nasty tricks you pull. Seems like we're makin' up more than we're makin' love. And it always seems you got somn' on your mind other than me. Girl, you got to change your crazy ways, you hear me?

Aerosmith - Crazy

10

Man: Come out with your hands on your head. Turn the rap music off and step away from the stereo. Put the rap album down, leave MC Hammer alone - turn it off.

Goldie Lookin Chain - Guns Don't Kill People Rappers Do

11
Man: Yo VIP, let's kick it.

Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby

12
Man: Hiya Barbie!
Girl: Hi Ken!
Man: You wanna go for a ride?
Girl: Sure, Ken!
Man: Jump in!

Aqua - Barbie Girl

13
Man: Who you trying to get crazy with, Ese? Don't you know I'm loco?

Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain
(quite like this cover version, too)

14
Woman: We're going to dance. We're going to dance. We're going to dance and have some fun.

Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart (last.fm)
Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart (YouTube)

15
Woman: Prejudice. Wrote a song about it. You wanna hear it? Hear it go.

En Vogue - Free Your Mind

16
Man: Yet our best trained, best educated, best equipped, best prepared troops refuse to fight. Matter of fact it's safe to say that they would rather switch than fight!

Public Enemy - Fight The Power

17
Man: This is a story about severe emotional problems.

Francis Dunnery - Too Much Saturn

18
Man 1: Turn the lights off, baby.
Man 2: This one's for the babies in the house.

Faith No More - Easy

19
Man:
I think it's time to discuss your philosophy of drug use as it relates to artistic endeavor.
Bomb The Bass - Bug Powder Dust

20
Man: We were sitting out on the step, you know...

Jurassic Five - Concrete Schoolyard

BONUS QUESTION - NOISE ONLY

Man: Zhuh, zuhhh, zuhhnm, nzhuhh...

Harry Nielsen - Lime In The Coconut

I'm ashamed to say the only one I know is

5. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love (or whatever the title is) by the Blues Brothers (if that's how they're named as the artists...).

oh and

12. Barbie Girl by Aqua

And I am very disappointed that the only song that came to mind when you mentioned spoken intros wasn't on it:

Man: I wanna talk to you.
Woman: The last time we talked, Mr Smith, you reduced me to tears. I assure you it won't happen again.

Right and right!

Though trust me: you do know more than two of the songs on show here. You just don't know them as stupidly well as you could!

Of course! D'oh! Actually I would have got to that but I thought twenty was probably enough. I could have ditched Aqua for it, though... Ahhhh well - you'll notice the thread title leaves room for sequels!

ooooh, close! That first one is the one for which I mentioned I knew of two answers. You're thinking of Misirlou off the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, I believe. And though that is indeed where the quote comes from, I'm afraid it's not the song I was thinking of!

And as for House Of Pain.... close but no banana. If it's any comfort that's the same answer my fiance came up with.

Yep! Deee Lite (an extra E, no S) it is. They managed to come out with one of the best pop songs in the history of ever as their first song, and then couldn't beat it. Not many bands can bag a Bootsy Collins and a Q-Tip for a first tune, and as one hit wonders go, it really is a wonder. I read somewhere that it's also one of the most popular tunes amongst pole dancers. Make of that what you will.
