Nope. Never felt the need to either. I know people say it's half of the greatest film of all time but it has never appealed to me.

It's not the greatest film of all time; it's merely one of the greatest films of all time.

And you've never seen Taxi Driver? Or Raging Bull? Or Goodfellas? Or Dog Day Afternoon? Or even Heat??

DDA was the one that I thought a real miss-out; think it might be right there within the JM aesthetic.

You're right Bill, I have never seen Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat et al.

I just don't like violence, in books or movies, and everything I read about Scorcese's films makes me think I won't like them because of that. I'm not saying I want to live on a diet of saccharine niceness in my fiction but watching gangsters squeeze each other's heads in vices and beat innocent bystanders to death with baseball bats? - just two of the delights I understand to be on offer in Goodfellas (?) - I think I'll pass. And I don't care how great the editing or the Steadicam work is. Didn't we have a thread about this some time ago?

We did, but it wandered off into discussing football.

Other movies I have never seen (not necessarily because they're violent, or have Woody Allen in them) include La Strada, The Seven Samurai, ANY of the Godfathers, Rashomon, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Silence of the Lambs, Last Tango in Paris, A Clockwork Orange, Closely Watched Trains, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, 8 1/2, Pinocchio, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Schindler's List, Smiles of a Summer Night, Yojimbo etc.

Noel Fielding because he was funny in The IT Crowd

Still as nature intended.

B&W movies just look better in black and white

Zombies because they're insatiable and because I don't think Stephanie Meyer will write a teen novel about zombie who falls in love. "Must not eat her braaaains....."

Clangers because it evokes my childhood in a way that Ivor doesn't

de Niro although both have appeared in terrible terrible films, Pacino won an Oscar for the downright awful Scent of a Woman

Spring because it's close to Summer

Red just because

Amazon because I find there's more choice

Judi Dench because she's not above appearing as M in the Bond movies

That could actually be pretty enjoyable. It was pretty much the romantic subplot of the Return of the Living Dead movies, wasn't it? "If you really love me, you'll let me eat your brains. I promise, it only hurts a little at first."

And of course De Niro's greatest achievement is Deer Hunter.

Okay, to each his own. But Dog Day Afternoon only has a very little bit of violence in it, and it's not extreme, so I still recommend that one to you, as well as the non-violent DeNiro/Scorsese film King of Comedy, which, if I had to guess, I think you would love.

That's The Untouchables, I think.

No, the vice is actually from Casino, and there is a very unpleasant scene involving baseball bats in that film, too. I wouldn't call the victims "innocent" exactly, but it's still very rough.

EDIT: Of course, yes, there is a famous baseball bat scene in The Untouchables too.
