Short story festival at Charleston in Sussex 15-18 September, with Mick Jackson, Tobias Hill, Ian Rankin, Grace Paley, Zadie Smith, William Boyd and more....

Thanks for mentioning this, wshaw. Am a fan of Boyd - so might just tootle along for his session, at least. And the venue, I can testify, is absolutely delightful - a lovely marquee set in the grounds of the Charleston residence where the Bloomsbury Set hung out. At least, that was the set up, last time. Went there in the summer of 2004 to hear a panel of writers (including our old friend Toby Litt - though the event was none the worse for his inclusion!) discussing the future of the Short Story blah, blah, blah ... A lovely summer's evening, wine or fruit cordials, lots of crumpled linen and floral prints, and amongst the crowd (it was a very full, er, tent) a delightful sprinkling of eccentric old duffers enthusing with vigour over the writers of yesteryear. Absolutely charming in a quintessentially English way - and such fun!

Excellent. I'm planning to make it there for some of it too...

Ooh, all of which reminds me - I forgot to thank you, sir. Those directions you gave me (for the Brighton Festival) - the round-the-houses-avoiding-the A23-at-all-cost ones, worked like a charm. At least they did on the going journey. Coming home I failed to reverse them properly and discovered I was on my way to wretched Staines, before getting back on the right track. Not quite sure what happened there ......

Staines? Erk. Now that is an achievement.

I have two free tickets to the "New Ways with Words" event on 24th September at 2:00pm. The event includes Geoff Dyer, Tessa Hadely, and Joe Dunthorne, and is described on this page, second one down:

http://www.charleston.org.uk/smallwo...-september.php

Anyway, I can't go, so I wondered if anyone would like the tickets. Just send me a PM or reply here.
