Default Top Ten: Instant Fix Songs

Now, I don't have a large volume of songs on my computer, nor do I have Itunes installed. I listen to Pandora, and to last.fm at work, but every so often I want to listen to a particular song, and neither Pandora or last.fm will do for that. I go searching on YouTube instead.

So, the list below is a list of songs I commonly, though occasionally, pull up on YouTube, to satisfy a craving. I then proceed to listen to each about 10 times.

I've divided them into Uppers and Downers, because they seemed to fall that way to me. And there are links to the YouTube videos too.

Uppers (ish)

1. The Pretenders: Brass In Pocket
2. Feist: Mushaboom, or 1234 (You might know the latter from the iPod ads, but I implore you to watch both videos, as they are adorable)
3. Outkast: Hey Ya - it does the trick, ok?
4. Moloko: Familiar Feeling - another hypnotic video- really worth watching, and a great song
5. Nicolai Dunger: Hunger - Swedish artist. This song consistently makes me happier. It's from his album wonderfully titled "Here's my song. You can have it: I don't want it anymore".

Downers (ish)

6. Imogen Heap: Hide and Seek. (It's also worth checking out the end of The O.C. season 2, and the Saturday Night Live parody of it here, both of which feature this song, for a few laughs)
7. Tori Amos: A Sorta Fairytale
8. Benjamin Biolay: Negatif

Right, think that's all the links up. Go listen, or comment derisively or otherwise below!

I'm with you on Brass in Pocket and A Sorta Fairytale.

I'm on Pandora most of the day, but my occasional YouTube fix is Abba's The Day before You Came. The video is atmospheric and it kind of reminds me of a Jacques Brel song, the lyrics being very important.

EDIT: not tooooo sure about some of the lyrics, though:

I must have read the morning paper going into town
And having gotten through the editorial no doubt I must have frowned...

Brass in Pocket, yes yes yes!

Also:
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Boo Hoo by KT Tunstall
Worried About Ray by The Hoosiers
Wail by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

These songs all make Kirsty Very Happy, in one way or another.

Ah, I love KT Tunstall, but I never get a quick music fix from her. She's great though; I like her acoustic album maybe more than the other two.

Ever since my 2-year-old son saw that iPod ad he has been obsessed with that song and we now have the YouTube page for the video in our favorites. Luckily, it is a cool video and a very catchy song because we are watching it a lot!

Don't 2-year olds have great taste! Must be all the shiny costumes. He might like Mushaboom too - that's quite quirky!

I'll have to give that one a test run, too. We ended up buying the CD as well, but everytime he hears that song he wants to watch the video on the computer.

I've already listed my top ten sad songs, and I don't ever really need an instant fix of sad, so I'll just list my top ten uppers: stuff I listen to when I need a jolt of positive norepinephrine in my cerebral circulation:

1 - "The Wind Chimes," from the Islands album, by Mike Oldfield
2 - "Green Grass and High Tides Forever," by the Outlaws
3 - "Ghost Riders in the Sky," based on an American cowboy legend, written by Stan Jones in 1948, but definitively performed, again, by the Outlaws
4 - "Landfall," by Jimmy Buffett
5 - "Miami 2017" (or "Seen The Lights Go Out on Broadway") by Billy Joel
6 - "Veteran Cosmic Rocker," by the Moody Blues
7 - "The Future's so Bright," by Timbuk 3
8 - "In America," by the Charlie Daniels Band
9 - "Synchronicity 2," by the Police
10 - "Lawyers, Guns and Money," by Warren Zevon

Honorable Mentions:
- "Break Up the Concrete," by Chryssie Hynde and the Pretenders
- "In the Middle of the Road," by Chryssie Hynde and the Pretenders
- "The Stranger," by Billy Joel
- "It's Just a Fantasy," by Billy Joel
- "Scandinavian Skies," by Billy Joel

I'm not sure I can make it to a top ten 'Upper' songs but two that spring to mind that ALWAYS cheer me up are:

Louis Jordan's Saturday Night Fish Fry and Reveille Rock by Johnny and the Hurricanes. (I know nine words in two minutes hardly qualifies as a song but it works for me.)
