Default Top 10 TV theme tunes

Not as cultured as Works of Art maybe but cultural touchstones all the same And I can't think of any recent theme tunes that stick in the memory. My top 10 anyway and no great insights:

1. Dr. Who - creepy and energising at the same time.

2. M*A*S*H - moving acoustics in a minor key. Always reminds me of my first boyfriend who was a M*A*S*H addict.

3. A Very Peculiar Practice - One of the best things Peter Davison ever did and fantastically surreal theme tune.

4. The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - I think we have approved the Eagles-sourced Journey of the Sorcerer before somewhere here.

5. Twin Peaks - the weirdest theme music I had ever heard. I couldn't hum it but it worked a treat as a theme to the series.

6. Camberwick Green From the cranking of the music box and the homely Brian Cant, to the calm music of the closing theme, pictures in music.

7. Tales of the Unexpected - chilling even now.

8. Grange Hill (the orginal theme) - Daft twanging and jumping about theme that sounded just like my comprehensive school.

9. The South Bank Show - over-familiar funked-up Paganini by the Lloyd-Webbers still works.

10. Joint honours here to Chi Mai from The Life and Times of David Lloyd George, and the themes from To Serve Them All My Days - which are inextricably linked in time and mood.

Honourable runners-up, mostly very hummable!

Shoestring; The Rockford Files; Rentaghost.

Those are almost unbetterable, Col! And top marks for reminding me of AVPP...

Col, you are doing very well at producing topics that will make people respond. These are great for me though, just what I need as I'm stuck at home, slowly mending.

top 10 I.N.P.O. Just as they break the surface of the conscious :

1. Rhubarb and Custard
- You started it with the twanging Grange Hill, this twangs more and is the perfect partner to the anarchic and frantic motion of the cartoon.

2. Sailing By - Possibly only known to late night R4 listeners. Perhaps it's the timing of it, every day at 00:45 that knits it into your very self.

3. The Archers - while I'm thinking about radio, surely this should be the National Anthem.

4. Coronation Street - Is this the most recognisable theme ever ?

5. Star Trek (T.O.S.) - The original series did have the best tune although DS9 is close and I also like the Enterprise song (but I'm alone in this)

6. Casablanca - You must remember this...

7. Easy Rider - Another film soundtrack great. I don't know if this counts as a theme but I'm sticking it in anyway. Steppenwolf never really did anything else of note (apart from Magic Carpet Ride which is in my all time top10 songs) but Born To Be Wild is just massive.

8. Blakes 7 - can you still remember it ?, stirring stuff and heavily influenced by Dr Who but it's a synth classic.

9. Rainbow - up above the streets and houses.... hated the programme (all the animals scared me), loved the theme.

10. H2G2 - I'll have to have hitchhiker as well, the excitement of a new episode heralded by the tune still makes me shiver.

thought of too late : Magic Roundabout, Captain Pugwash, James Bond, Darth Vader, Taxi, Cheers ::shudder::, Quantum Leap, Dallas, The A Team.

I liked the fact that they gave it an airing in the film version, slowly-spinning giant Guide and all, and I think Neil Hannon's So Long And Thanks For All The Fish also made a great addition to the H2G2 theme.

I am aiming for Top 10 Film Themes for another occasion but we can allow Easy Rider and Casablanca here.

I very nearly added Blake's 7 too - those last few bars with their eerie electronic crescendoes. But it might have been a sci-fi overload with that. Similarly Star Trek- I think I liked DS:9 as much as the original theme.

I have a handful of additions, starting with - and apologies, but you have to be a certain age and British to really get these - Summer Hols morning TV:

1. Robinson Crusoe
2. The Flashing Blade
3. Champion the Wonder Horse
4. Belle & Sebastian
5. Why Don't You...?
6. Heidi
7. Black Beauty
8. Follyfoot

...and on a Lee Majors kick, the execrable but unforgettable:

9. The Six Million Dollar Man
10. The Fall Guy

Oooh love Champion the Wonder Horse!

Quote:
Like a streak of lightning flashing 'cross the sky,
Like the swiftest arrow whizzing from a bow,
Like a mighty cannonball he seems to fly,
You'll hear about him everywhere you go,
The time will come when everyone will know the name of...

Champion, the Wonder Horse!

White Horses! Of course!

Ironically, I'd swap that for Black Beauty had I thought of it earlier, but as the BB theme is played in the background of the I'm Alan Partridge DVD menu screen it was uppermost in my mind...
