And it's almost a waltz; well, not quite 3/4 time actually, I think 6/8. Any musicians in the house?

I'm dancing anyway!

Yes, I'm with you on that, Aemy. The Eleanor Farjeon poem (which it is, used as a hymn) is superb anyway, and the combination of the words and the melody make it one of the best hymns/songs I can think of.

Edit: Looking it up, it is actually in 9/4 time. The tune is called Bunessan.

Thanks so much for your work on this, Col, and I hope you're feeling better.

9/4 time! Now I'm really better educated, but I bet it plays havoc with the dancing! Which is a mad fantasy since I can't dance right now anyway. Did your source give any other examples of 9/4? (Don't bother if it's a nuisance to look it up.)

Many thanks,

Aemy

There's some quite interesting stuff about time signatures here. Because 9 is divisible by 3, it won't feel that different from a 3/4 time signature, possibly the only difference will be a stronger emphasis on the first beat of the bar, so instead of:

da-da-da / da-da-da / da-da-da / da-da-da / da-da-da / da-da-da

you'll have:

DA-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da / DA-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da

Yes, that's exactly it. It just makes more of a difference to the timing and feel of the music that it's 9/4 (as opposed to 9/.
