06 The Island of Doctor Moreau, H. G. Wells
05 The Agonising Resurrection of Victor Frankenstein, Thomas Ligotti
04 The Claw of the Conciliator, Gene Wolfe
Second volume of The Book of the New Sun, remains an interesting but challenging read.
03 Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson
Is it wrong of me to call this "like a thinking man's Dan Brown"? Probably. What it actually reminded me of, oddly (maybe), was Theodore Roszak's Flicker -- a deep sinking into one niche of the world's culture, a historical conspiracy thriller on a fairly startling scale, and not exactly a science fiction novel (even though this one won notable awards as such, presumably due to the author's SF status). This is something I'll probably have to think about (and then review) at length.
02 WHAT IF?, Randall Munroe
It's that bit off of XKCD, but in a book. How can you mark it down?
01 The Meaning of Luff, Matthew Hughes
A collection of stories and novellas about Luff Imbry - a corpulent master-thief of humanity's penultimate age. Lots of fun.

Default Re: Palimplists 2016

Jan:
  1. Dead Pets by Sam Leith - occasionally mildly amusing.
  2. Nick Broomfield by Jason Wood - long conversation with the documentary filmmaker that made me want to watch, or rewatch, most of his films.
Feb:
  1. Darwin's Island by Steve Jones.
March

  1. Bugger all! No books at all. Shedloads of comics though.

April

  1. The Starcrossed by Ben Bova - a shaggy dog story of a novel. After it gave me the chance to congratulatorily hug myself for realising that the book was loosely based on the author's experiences with the benighted Starlost TV show there was little to be bothered with. The book quickly ran out of steam and humour before getting round to a happy-ever-after ending and a classic Hollywood gag punchline.

May
  1. British Comics: a Cultural History by James Chapman - an interesting little whistle-stop tour of the history of British comics which might have had a bit more gravitas if it didn't contain the odd odd clanger like:
    Quote:
And in the late 1970s a new, anarchic, violently oppositional subculture exploded onto the scene:punk. Punk was spontaneous, aggressive and emphasized working class 'street cred' rather than the laid-back hedonistic idealism of the hippie movement. And its favoured mode of expression was not comics but music, particularly heavy metal.(My italics.)
  2. How Not to Write a Screenplay: 101 Common Mistakes Most Screenwriters Make by Denny Martin Flynn.
June
  1. Ayoade on Ayoade by Richard Ayoade
  2. Big Bosoms and Square Jaws: The Biography of Russ Meyer, King of the Sex Film by Jimmy McDonough
July
  1. What Just Happened?: Bitter Hollywood Tales From the Front Line by Art Linson
  2. Deathbird Stories by Harlan Ellison
  3. Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovich
  4. The Twighlight Zone Companion by Marc Scott Zicree
  5. Stone Junction by Jim Dodge.

December
  1. Ten Tales of Ten Worlds by Arthur C Clarke
  2. Hard To Be a God by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
