I used to listen to it in the bath after football matches every Sunday. It's like a comfort album for me now (same as Richard D James) because it's so familiar.

I don't think I listen to any albums now as often as I listened to some of these between 1996 and 2000. I rarely persevere with those 'difficult' albums now; the ones you buy on a recommendation and have to listen to about 25 times to get the least inroad.

Ranked in order of how much I would like to listen to them again. Some druggie bastard stole my record collection five years ago. Items 1, 3, 4 and 8 were among those stolen.
  1. Tindersticks - Tindersticks
  2. Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants
  3. The Breeders - Last Splash
  4. The Auteurs - After Murder Park
  5. Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider
  6. Suede - Dog Man Star
  7. Tricky - Maxinquaye
  8. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call
  9. Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
  10. Throwing muses - Red Heaven

Good call on Second Toughest in the Infants. Can't believe I forgot that and Maxinquaye.

Crumbs, how could I have forgotten Suede from my list? Actually I remember now - they got bumped by Pulp. But anyway, good call.

And I'd completely forgotten about Sparklehorse. Must go have a listen...

Pulp almost made the list, but it would have been His & Hers rather than A Different Class. I love the Babies-She's A Lady-Do You Remember The First Time-Pink Glove stretch (yeah, I know, Happy Endings is int here, but let's not talk about that).

Another album I thought about including was 1977 by Ash. Because Girl From Mars, Angel Interceptor and Gold Finger are still great songs, and it was fun to here them going all Sonic Youth on Innocent Smile ... But then I remembered "Oh, Yeah" ... Nuclear Sounds was a better album, all round, but lacked the giddy highpoints of 1977.

For some reason, Tom Waits's 90s work - when he started to go really mad - are hard to find in New Zealand. Though I note Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards has just been released on vinyl.
