Yeah, I agree. Sequels usually suck, and European Gigolo was one of the worst. Mind, I've got something of a penchant for toilet humor, if done well. I rather liked the first Duece Bigalow as a matter of fact. I never would have seen the second on my own though. A friend suggested it & I went along. Whoops!

Actually it's not mine - I just hunted out the pic on the internet.
But I wish it was!

Col, I'm guessing you'll be pretty keen on this as a combination of Hayao Miyazaki and Diana Wynne Jones...

It seems a bit odd that its UK release date is 23 Sep 05 when it seems to have premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival though.

Yep, been waiting the last year for that. It premiered in the UK at the Cambridge Film Festival in July (the day of the Harry Potter bk release). So far I'm aware that it's only like Howl's Moving Castle in some part, and that Billy Crystal was totally the wrong choice to do the voice-acting for Calcifer (the demon in the fire), but most DWJ fans seem to have liked it for itself, even if it does change the story rather in the second half.

I think it will have limited release in the UK, which will mean trekking to Newcastle to see it, as we did for Spirited Away.

Hmmm, when the published details say 'loosely based' I guess that's a fair indication of liberties taken with the story. Not knowing any DWJ myself, I wouldn't know how that might affect the quality of the end product, but the reviews look a bit more lukewarm than those for Spirited Away.

Billy Crystal seems to be a bit of a lazy choice for any voiceover acting - he always seems hammy and overly artificial to me.

Wavid, I agree re. The Big Lebowski: it friggin' rocks. The Dude has got to be one of the classic characters. People are holding conventions for this movie.

I should watch it again sometime.

Yuck. I thought it was awful. I even preferred Deuce Bigalow (the original one).

I partially agree with gil - or, to dissociate myself from Deuce Bigalow praise, partially-partially agree. I like The Big Lebowski but not that much, not as much as I know lots of others do (including it seems, rick and Wavid). To me it seems to be almost excessively whimsical, and to appeal rather lazily to cosy notions of mild off-the-grid counterculturality. It's nice but in terms of characterisation, tight writing, intelligence and all the other things we love about the Coens, I think it comes pretty low down in their oeuvre.
