The film group did die on its arse, didn't it - but presumably the Google groups you mentioned could be used to create that and other similar things, nicely out of sight for those not interested. I couldn't help noticing that A Slice of Parsnip doesn't lead anywhere special these days.

Heh, true. The Parsnip archive will probably make it onto a WordPress blog at some point.

I would suggest the following:
  • The subforuming of Features to somewhere. As I understand it, it was created for columns (of which JS only did four or five) and for showcasing other efforts. It's not all that popular to warrant a full forum section to itself.
  • Changing the name of the Reviews section to something more appropriate, especially since it's not always reviews in those areas.
  • Probably time to say goodbye to Parsnip.
  • The subforuming of Ten Tens into a Miscellany Area - perhaps just the General Discussions.
  • A rejiggling of the Films section to be TV & Film.
  • An Arts & Culture section, perhaps to incorporate Museums, Music, Theatre, etc. - rather than name it Other Reviews
  • Book Group Discussions to fall under the Book Reviews section, to keep them together.
So, er
  • ยทForum Stuff
    oIssues & Feedback
    oFAQs
  • Reviews
    oBook Reviews
    oBook Group
    oFilm & TV
  • oArts & Culture
    oPolitics & Society
  • General
    oChat
    oGames

Interesting ideas, Stewart. I'd back the creation of Film & TV instead of Film. At least I think I would...

However I'd oppose the removal of the Top Tens forum. I really like it, and it's a good format to promote as it often provokes a lot of discussion and is an interesting way to get to people's thoughts and tastes without expecting detailed reviews all the time.

Yes, features could be subforum'd.

All About Palimpsest should be the only forum at the top, then Book Reviews etc immediately below.

Frankly, I think giving face time to anything but the FAQs is excessively indulgent.

That's a point. I'd forgotten about the FAQs (which need updating anyway).

Can you arrange things, Wavid, so that only unregistered visitors see the All About Palimpsest or FAQs at the top, and logged-in members have that forum hidden, so the first full forum heading they see is Books? A sort of reverse of how unregistered viewers can't see the BDO subforum?

I'm sure it would be possible. There is a tonne of stuff in All About Palimpsest that would be of interest to members, though, like this thread!

An alternative would be to move all that stuff into the wordpress hosted homepage, so it wouldn't be in the forum at all.

It'll be another job to plough through the FAQs and various other bits to make sure it's all up to date and relevant...

You got my support Wavid, once again: you da man!

I use my palimpmail all the time, it's my principal non work email, so I'll go save things to somewhere now.

As to forums, wot Stewart said really, I never used the film group, like the idea of an arts and culture - especially as there have been more and more reviews of that type of thing recently - and I too like the top tens.

I have not one jot of technical helpability to offer, but I'll sit here looking at my non-palimpsest screen willing you on! Mind you, I'm going to be miles away for almost all of September so probably won't notice.
